Dealer replaced, now more brake dust...
My BMW dealer changes my rear brakes on my 60k miles X3. It's now showing excessive brake dust compared to the original one. Are the factory ones ceramic? If so did the dealer put cheaper ones one? Also I notice it doesn't stop as quickly as the original ones....

Dealer installs OEM brakes. They are usually Pagid, Jurid, Textar, ATE.
They are not ceramic. As for lesser brake power, it's probably due to the fact that the pads are not bedded. You can bed them in yourself. Just google it and there are numerous brake & tire vendors that have published the procedure. Or you could just drive the car like that and in time the brakes will "settle" and will have the same braking power. It will take some time though. You might end up with not the same braking performance like bedded in brakes, but close.

Thanks doru. It's been about 6 month and still feels the same
My fronts are original still, but probably due for a change. I'll make sure to use ceramic ones for those. |

I would not use ceramic brakes. If you don't like the stopping power of regular brakes, you will hate the stopping power of ceramics.
About 6-7 years ago I went with Akebono on my defunct 5 series. The wheels looked great - didn't need to clean them, but braking was horrendous. I thought I had toy brakes. Plus: No brake dust, clean wheels forever, takes a loooong time for the pads to wear out Cons: no braking power This is my experience, others might tell otherwise. But brakes that don't leave any dust (great!!!) and take forever to wear out = no brakes. 0.02

I have been running Akebono on both my 2007 Z4 ///M coupe and 2001 E39 for over 5 years. They have plenty of stopping power and very low dust. I agree they don't have the same initial bite as OEM pads, but for me, they have plenty of stopping power, plus my car and wheels stay way cleaner. I'm not sure why they didn't have much stopping power for you? Maybe they were not bedded in properly? Maybe they were a defective set? My experience has been very positive with them. When my X3 needs pads, I'll probably use Akebono and I hope I don't have the same low stopping power experience as you did with them. |

Our OEM brakes (2015 F25) were TRW...even the crap rusty calipers and carrier where TRW....another name for Totally Wank.....one winter on, and the BREMBO rotors and pads are doing great....

Another vote for Akebono Euro brake pads. I have them on my X3 and used to run them on a E36 M3 when I had it. No problems with stopping power. Maybe you have to press a little harder than you were initially used to, but you will get used to that too. Of course, when I switched to Akebono pads, I replaced the rotors with Centric Cryo-High Carbon Plain 125 Series Rotors at the same time.

To go along with the dust of OE (semi metallic) pads, one also get an added benefit: these pads usually score the expensive part, rotors. I'll gladly give up that "initial bite" to avoid changing these with every brake job. Consider also that the X3 is an SUv, not a track-day vehicle.

Same here also. I replace the rear pads in February and noticed the excessive break dust and then in April when the fronts were replaced same things. Only reason I had the dealer perform the work is that the X3 was still under the maintenance plan.
