Rumors, engine
so what are the current rumors for the engine and power output?
last I heard was 450hp/450 torque. I was hoping for something to rival the Stelvio Quad, but 450hp from BMW is probably equal to 500hp from Alfa I am really hoping they give it the full M treatment, meaning upgraded leather option, full leather, carbon trim... Would be nice to get some two tone leather options as well (Mercedes, Audi, Land Rover, and I think Alfa all offer it) |

Interwebs are pretty sure it'll be the S58 engine - based off the current S55 found in the M3/4 that currently makes 425 hp base. 444 with Comp Package. So 450 HP is a good bet and assuming BMW expects some kind of towing ability, increase it's Torque also. It's been confirmed the X3 is now open to individual color choices now so the additional trim will most certainly be there.
While I like the current 3 series wagons, there is no option to have it with the 6 banger in the States. Even if there was the price of a tricked out one would be on par of just getting a M3 or so. This X3M is sounding like a real mean and sweet ride that nobody can't deny considering.

S58 is the S55 successor according to info on the web and it will be the best of B58 + S55 taken together = S58 first of its kind to be placed on the X3M and X4M

I think the S58 will also be the same engine used in the new M3/M4 (w/ M XDrive ) with close to 500hp.

The 500HP mark is high but the competition is out there. BMW treats their current X5M with @570HP and it can compete with a Cayenne Turbo S. It is the same engine that was in the outgoing M5 and current M6GC. In order for this trend to continue, BMW needs to keep pushing boundaries...especially in M vehicles.
The X3M will see stiff competition at 500HP from Merc GLC AMG63S (they will build the non-coupe version), AR Stelvio QV, P Macan Turbo S and possibly the Audi RSQ5 (I think it has been confirmed at 450HP and may change closer to 500HP but will never be a better performer than a P Macan). IMO, they will put the same engine in the X3M that the new M3/M4 will get...obviously M tuned to support each vehicles needs. The difference in weight between platforms will never mess with performance hierarchy and it would allow the X3M/X4M to be leaders in what is emerging as the highest selling segment. Having the flagship M as a segment leader will only help BMW with marketing and sales down the line. HP isn't everything and it is very possible that BMW can build a S58 @455HP and keep pace with the pack...but why just keep pace? A 500HP S58 X3M/X4M wouldn't cost BMW any extra money, still sell extremely well and ensure BMW best in class...exactly where they should be. Yes! We will pray for 500HP!!!

Hoping for 500HP and great torque...if BMW GETS 650HP out of the next X5M it seems logical to Go for 500HP out of the X3M...if not then that creates a huge space to loose customers to competitors: clearly the X3M would be within reach ($78k) for more buyers and X5M will be reserved for those who are in the entry price point of +$103k...the market will crash in 1.5 years guaranteed. If bmw is smart they'll beef up the X3M enough to corral enough buyers to preserve sales during the crash!

Seems surprising that they would debut a new M engine on something other than a coupe/sedan. I feel like X3M will use current M3 engine and then in a few years they will debut the new engine on M3 rather than using an "old" engine

Doubt the X3M/X4M will be 500HP, BMW never match the actual C63 even with M3/M4 CS in HP department, emission has to do with it as well as CAFE (average mileage across the fleet).
I'd be super happy if X3M/X4M would use detuned variation of S58 or even S55, none of that funky non real M engine ala the one in the current M2 |
