New Battery Registration

The battery on my 2005 X3 is dying in what can only be described as a cold northeast winter; the first in a while! I know it has been discussed in some older threads, but is there a consensus about whether a new battery needs to be registered with the vehicle's computer to get the proper charging and battery life? Would this apply to 2005 MY BMW's?

Good question.....I'm aslo interested as I have an '05 X3 with the original battery.

My gut is telling me the '05 pre dates all the crazy technology about battery registration since it is based on e46 3 series archetecture.

I know for a fact that a new battery needs to run through the computer recognition for my 2007 x3. I had this done only a few weeks ago. If this step is omitted the computer will not recognize the battery as new and electrical fault codes may show up. This was confirmed by two mechanics I tend to trust. I can't imagine a 2005 model being very different in this aspect.

I asked my SA regarding this and he said that recoding is only needed if battery specs change. If it is a direct replacement, no need to recode your car. This applies to ALL BMWs...

My understanding was that it needs to be coded to reset the charge rate from the alternator.
