steering wheel centering
Hi guys,
New owner, first generation X4 M Competition, had Eibach lowering springs installed, then alignment, but steering wheel was off to the left. Prior Eibach instalment, steering wheel was off to the left but barely noticeable. Today had a second alignment, steering wheel was centred, tested for 5 km - was a ok, later today though after driving 10-15km more, it came off center to the left again. What needs to be done so it is centred properly ( have tried turning left/right procedure, but with no success ) ? Apologies if this was discussed previously. Kind regards, |

It is very easy to adjust the tie rods. As long as you move them the same amount on each side, you won't affect your alignment.
Basically you need to undo the pinch clamps, turn the rods both upwards (if looking from the front of the vehicle, or downwards if the wheel is pointed to the right) and lock the pinch clamps back down. Depending on how much the steering wheel is off will determine how much you need to turn them. I would start with 1/16 of a turn and try it out. Always mark the position of the rods before you start with a marker so you can always go back to the beginning if required. Don't even need to jack up the vehicle, just turn the wheel all the way to each side. Very easy. |

Do it again!
The steering was not set straight. There is actually a tool that your alignment shop can get...

Thank you both for chiming in.
I was wondering if there is a self calibration of the steering wheel ( after reading the procedure for full left/right turns with 2 sec hold ), so if it is a matter of a classic alignment then it is all fine. Shop did not had a levelling tool, it was me behind the wheel, setting it straight as per my point of view. In any case I am soon putting new set of tires, so will redo alignment, if needed using my levelling mini tool used for home repairs Thanks again. |
