The 265/40 & 295/35 - better tire mod is pretty essential...
Recently got done installing some Michelin PS-4 265/40 front & 295/35 ZR 21 rear tires & I'm already liking the overall feel of this beastly SAV much more than before. IMO this is a must do mod & wish the factory would've given us all a touch more rubber to work with. The overall tire height isn't a dead even exact match, but it's as close as you're currently going to get given the current tire size options available from the PS4 model line today...
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT 4S 265/295 setup Front Size: 265/40ZR21 (105Y) XL - MO1 Mercedes Rear Size: 295/35ZR21 (107Y) XL - MO1 Mercedes *Don't use the "Star BMW" spec as the 295 is a "front specific" tire for the X5 M and the 265 rear tire your X3 M came with (can't simply be shoved to the front). It's not that easy & not the way it works. The 265 rear tire your X3 M came with was designed by Michelin to be a "rear specific". HOPE THIS ALL HELPS... !!!

I plan to get the exact same tires for my G01 when the weather starts to heat up and I can put my 21's back on.

Yes indeed, the X3 M40i with the 245/35 fronts & 275/30 rears is not enough rubber...

They're perfect. Most tires are always a tad soft & touch slippery when you initially get them (while their still brand new). Always check the DOB date on the tires. But after a few hundred miles of moderate use (ie - a few heating up & cooling down cycles are naturally performed by having them on the car & driving on them) they're easily the perfect tire for this high performance SAV.
The PS-4 is an extremely smooth tire, quieter & much more compliant than most. Yet at the same time it's rigid enough for extreme cornering & has tons of grip with a notable 300 treadwear rating. For me & many other enthusiast minded drivers, these tires are the perfect blend of a mostly street & light track use tire...

I went with same setup on my M40i. I love it. I didn't personally feel a huge difference even though I have softer suspension than X3M. I never tested grip differences with dragy before, but only after I got the tires. I feel there is less wheel spin compared to my OEM tires (Bridgestone Alenza 245/275). Overall happy with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

do you need spacers for these if using the stock 21" rims?

No spacers are required of any kind. These tires sizes work well and are a very popular option in the X3 / X4 M world...

Is the MP PS4S a directional tire? I see that they have the "outside" marking but does it matter whether it is on the left or right side? I don't see an arrow on it for rotation, but it does look like the tread pattern would be different based on the direction the tire is rotating.

Essential indeed
I dumped the garbage Contis and put on a set of PIRELLI SCORPION ZERO ALL SEASON PLUS XL 265/40s up front and 295/35s out back. Amazing difference in ride and confidence for Tahoe trips is a plus.
Did I mention the Contis were garbage? |

Hi all,
New user here but have been reading the forum as currently looking at new tyre options as the standard Conti rears are on their way out after around 9.5k miles! The tyres seem to have been pretty poor though, not been impressed. Just wondering about the 295/35 option on the rears as a quick internet search seems to show the standard rear wheel size is 10 inches which seems to have a max tyre size of 285, is this not correct or are the wheels wider than that? Cheers |

Have you had these on at all during the summer? I am curious about the summer / warmer weather performance of these. This seems to be the only all season option in the desired size. |

You can find direct reviews on these tires vs pilot all seasons and a few other tires. If you want best in class dry grip and performance but can deal with snow then it's the Pilot 4 all seasons even though they only come in stock size. The Scorpions are suppose to be a tiny bit worse in general except they're suppose to have slightly better tread life, less noise and be slightly more comfortable. They're both UHP all seasons tires.

Also, does going wider tires hurt MPG much or negligible? Not that it matters with our cars, just generally wondering. Last edited by GreatAvalon; 02-27-2021 at 10:27 AM.. Reason: to add first Bmw. |
