I've never paid attention to this until yesterday... The light sensor controlling the auto-headlight is independent to the light sensor controlling the day/night mode of the dash/AC display.

I drove home before 5pm, overcast and raining. Auto-light turned on the headlight, and it's good. However, the dash color remained white (day time mode) indicating the sensor did not think its quite dark enough to turn to night mode (color would change to red/amber). All the cars I've driven (I owned a few, and rented plenty) would turn the dash display to night mode as soon as headlights were turned on.

I've noticed that as well, driving through tunnels where the lights come on sat nav stays in daytime mode

Is it smart enough to read dusk times? When nightview for me today around 4pm which would have been about right?

However coming from a E70 which had to be manually switched between day/night this is a relief

That's an interesting question if the sunset time has any impact to when the dash mode changes... I assume there are two light sensors and/or camera sensing that influence when the dash mode changes, but I'm open to other input if someone knows more on this.

I'm also curious if the auto-headlight is influenced by rain-sensing, which turns auto-wiper on already.

Nice. We needed them last week with 4 cell phones needing charging.

Nice catch -- and an interesting engineering choice. It means separate sensors and maybe, just maybe, a a future ISTA integration level that uses the fact that there are two separate sensors to do a better job of keeping the control display visible in daylight. For some reason, at my I-level (S15A-18-07-530) the iDrive control display is often dark in daylight and slow to brighten.

I've Been Curious How Accurate the Speedometer Would Be

My 3 previous BMW's have had optimistic speedometers. I was hoping this one would be better. After all, our 2013 Cr-V was dead nuts as delivered new. Yesterday, I checked the X3's speedo against my Garmin and one of those roadside radars that are supposed to make you feel guilty and slow down (as far as I know). I do slow down before I spot where the radar signal is coming from. It's interesting that many of them just flash "Slow Down" if you get 5 MPH or so over the limit. Anyway, my new (200 miles) X3 (M40i, standard 19" wheels with 245/50 Bridgestone Allenza RFT tires measures a consistent 3 MPH optimistic at 70 MPH and about 2 MPH optimistic at 45 to 50 MPH. It will only get more optimistic as the tires wear. I haven't checked the odometer yet.

Yes it's influenced by the rain sensor as well. I think that is stated in the manual. ;-)

When measuring the oil level, idle go up from 700 to 1000rpm, and it takes a few minutes.

All three of my BMWs have reported 3mph high at 60-70mph when checked against GPS. Funny though, I have checked the odometer and it is spot on. I remember a thread years ago where there was a worry about the odometer reporting more miles than traveled. That turned out to be not true.

I just want I make sure that everyone who has PDC with Surround View knows about the Car Wash option. It's buried in iDrive.

It blows me away every time I use it to perfectly get my car onto the conveyor system at the car wash without bashing my wheels against the guides.

Look for it if you have PDC.

Yep, great feature, also help me to navigate through narrow drive through without getting any curb rash. Posted this some time ago in another thread... It works even if I have the outside mirrors folded.

It tells you how far to toll plaza by displaying an image of a person in a hut on the HUD.

Yes, the odo on my 2010 M3 was good. I didn't measure the previous 2. If we're doing any traveling, I've just taken the Garmin and used its readout instead of the car speedometer. This is the first BMW with I-drive and Nav I've had. I'll miss the accurate Garmin digital speedo.

I've got a great one

Push the speech button and then say "explain" and she will go into a list of things to say that she understands. Once through about 4-6 she asks if you want more.

Keep saying "yes" and you are guaranteed to hear at least one you did not know.

If you are stopped, she will display the options as well as say them to you. Along with examples.

Awesome!!

And, he/she has arm extended, as if waiting for payment!

I like my HUD, it’s much better than the previous one I had.
