I will check the area you are mentioning.

I think the general cause of our wind and traffic noise is the front doors not closing tightly enough. Is it due to the seals itself or if they were badly installed or is it just bad alignment of the doors I don't know. All I am sure is noise which is more than acceptable is entering the cabin. Mirror gaskets may have lessened some of the wind noise I was having , but I still hear more noise than usual what my tires are making on a wet road for example.

Another thing I recently noticed while examining the front door is that there is a gap I can feel when from outside I press with my fingers the door frame at the B Pillar as doors are closed. I tried it with a Toyota Corolla, unlikely it is robust. I may be wrong but everytime I pay attention to the noise inside I feel it is coming from close to B pillar. I wonder if this is the cause.

I checked the area under the door in daylight, there's a gap between the front and back doors at the bottom of the doors so it's not supposed to be sealed, still there's a lot of water that got in there. I agree with your analysis.

The door seals sit just above the bottom of the doors sills, mine gets no dirt in at all but when I jet-wash it it gets water in there, so not easy to get water ingress on mine anyway.
I have said before I get no wind/road/tyre noises at all in the car, it is all but silent and that has pleased my dealership, as if it was noisy it would be back their and not at home.
Again my car is week 40 build ( 1 st week October ).

I have about 250 miles on my 2012 - no abnormal wind/traffic noise, no rattles. Quite pleased.

Hello all X3 owners,

I have an X1 and two years ago I was complaining to my local dealer about same issue. They adjusted my doors (now you need to push the doors little more) and they gave me the silicon rubber for squeeks. I drove the X3 afterwards and I've notice the same wind noise as on X1.
Did you see the X1 facelift pictures? The mirror are considerable smaller.
I will ask my dealer about this window rubber, though my car is no longer under warranty.
Thanks for the info, on X1 forum i didn't find nobody to fight for this problem.

Cheers!

I've got my car back. They didn't fit new seals as they found nothing at all wrong with the way they are fitted. They tried pulling in the doors past the BMW spec, this made no difference to the noise (which they can hear). They measured the glass, it's 1mm thinner than on an X5. Next step is BMW regional, as suggested by the dealer.

Interesting about the glass. I have a little wind noise and noticed a few weeks ago that when I have condensation on the side windows lowering them and then closing them doesn't clear it. All my previous cars have done this.

I wonder whether the seals around the windows are not quite flush and are therefore letting in noise. This makes sense if the glass is thinner.

Too bad. I was just planning a visit myself to the dealer to have the front doors pulled in , hoping it could help with the noise.

Re the glass being thinner, what I don't quite understand is many members here mention that they have no such wind or traffic noise . I suppose glass is the same thickness for all.

I will ask my dealer to replace my door seals and readjust the doors. If they refuse to do it I will look into contacting BMW Germany to ask for an expert to come and check for the issue.

My dealer has really tried hard but my car is still noisy. Having said that it's quieter than their demo cars. They suspect the F25 doesn't have enough sound proofing. BMW regional are being involved next but maybe I'm just too picky...but at 30mph in the wet I can hear the tyres sloshing through the water. Even our Mini One doesn't do that.

My dealer has compared my car to two 2012 models (me too)l, both were worse than mine. The dealer has not seen enough X3s to know whether this is normal for the car. A number of people here say their cars are quiet. All I know this that mine isn't and anyone from the dealer who comes out for a test drive agrees, it's not terrible but it's not right either. If it's normal they can't fix it. I await my meeting with BMW.

I don't think you are being too picky. I was listening again on the motorway earlier at 80mph and it's quiet. I'm sure if our X3s sounded the same I would also notice. The difficulty is proving it to your dealer. I think you need to try to get in another X3 at a different dealer, perhaps an early 2011 production if possible. As soon as you find one without the problem (and I think you will) you'll have proof that it's normal

Yes, it does in my 2012 28i...both Wind noise and traffic noise are more than normal. I even mentioned this in my first thread that I can hear my wife standing from outside speaking to me clearly even with all the windows are closed and engine running. It never happened in my previous Saab 9-3. I don't do much highway driving, mostly city driving in and around Boston. At every stop light I can hear all the vehicles around me, that too if there was a Bus or Semi I need to pump up my volume to avoid the sound. Initially i felt that windows were open! Funny thing is if any old Dodge RAM near me I get scared that my exhaust fall off...because of the noise.

May be I should have opted for Premium Sound pkg which has more speakers to suppress external noise. My base stereo doesn't do much justice.

Best way to test the insulation is to sit inside the car, close all the windows and doors, keep the engine running, mute the audio and ask your wife or buddy to talk from outside, see how much you can hear. Try this in your X3 and another car if possible.

That's a good one but if you are driving more than 100MPH limit then you ear pressure increases which eventually suppresses all external noise to some limits.

May be you should retry with Decibel meter ...iOS or Android apps available for that.

Some of you say it's noisy, some of you don't. Could it be one or more of the options?

What are the differences in options? You experience/don't experience noise, and you have/haven't:
- Moonroof?
- Bigger wheels? 17", 18", 19" or bigger
- Brand of tyres?
- Type of tyres? All year, summer, winter, runflats?
- Dynamic Dampers/Sports dampers/normal dampers?
- M sport vs Standard? (the difference in aerodynamics)
- Maybe even US vs. Euro models?
- Engine variations? Diesel (non US) or Petrol? 20, 30 or 35 variants.
- Mudflaps?

Just trying to figure out if it could be something else than a production error.

The sound insulation issue is not only while driving, it happens when you are stopped. All I can think is the Door seals or window glass thickness. Does tinting the front windows will solve the problem? Cuz the only difference in Saab was the front windows are tinted black with 25% visibility and rear windows are 5% visibility. (I know it's not legal )

I have excessive traffic/outdoor noise:

-> No moon-roof
-> 245/55 R17 Bridgestone Dueler - All seasons
-> US spec
-> 28i - 3.0L Naturally Aspirated Inline-6 (one of the most refined and smooth engine I ever drove)
-> Pretty much base model with only Conv & Cold weather pkg

I have no complaint about noise. I did a test yesterday using a handheld db meter.

2011 35i, 18" wheels, Pirelli Sottozero winter tires, panoramic roof, 65MPH, Normal mode, radio off, heating/cooling fan off, windows and roof closed.

Using the A weighting I recorded a maximum value of 68 over a 1/2 mile stretch of highway. Using the C weighting I recorded a maximum value of 97 over a 1/2 mile stretch of highway.

I have Moonroof, 18" wheels, summer tyres, MSport, Diesel 30.

The talking test is a good one. Mine fails.

if you want to get scientific: take two iPhones, set the alarm at full volume on one, set it off and then place it 1m from the X3 on the ground. Get in, close the door and record the decibel level with an app on the 2nd iPhone. Repeat with the first iPhone at the front, back etc. Then find someone on this forum to do the same thing and compare readings. I'm happy to try for you but the wife is away with the 2nd iPhone at the moment
