Totally understand what you’re saying but I question the additional utility associated with SUV/SAVs. I’ve bent in the new X3, and other than the higher seating position (if that’s your thing) I don’t see an advantage over my F80.
That's a pretty laughable statement. Apparently you never haul anything taller than a suitcase, drive anywhere that requires more than 5" ground clearance, or on actual hills with snow.

Personaly, I need the higher driving position on the X, but there are loads of people that don’t.
It’s supply and demand.

The US had the CTS-V wagon and it didn’t sell. Audi used to bring over the S4 and S6 wagons (not their R brethren) but the ‘mericans didn’t buy enough volume. There was even a suburu wrx wagon for a while.

The MB e63 is the last bastion of performance wagons for the US and it’s a special order limited model. Unless you’d consider the Volvo polestar wagon a comp...I don’t.

Agreed. Was hoping it would be more reminiscent of x5 stance in a smaller version.

Agreed....living in a city where traffic is 24/7 it's a waste and oh well to the break neck launching only to come to a screeching halt at the millions of stop lights every 500 feet....not gonna miss 1300/month either.

Considering the same... less the lease swap part. Currently in a 17 X5M but will probably be due right around the time the X3M will finally release.
Yeah I may keep it til the maturity of my lease...depends on actual release of X3M.

Ever considered just making the car as good as you can, from the outset? Rather than slotting predetermined place holders in a respective range?

I wonder if the E46 M3 was given 333 BHP (343 in EU, IIRC) because the CSL needed “room”?

Or maybe they made the original as good as they could...and then tried harder with the CSL.

This new approach makes little sense to me...who will bother with the “base” Ms going forward??
Although I agree with you & wish car companies would make the best car they can at the time, that's just not the way it is anymore.

I know who will buy the base M:

1) People who can't afford the next tier or

2) People who just don't want to pay more money for the next tier.

BMW isn't the only company doing this. Heck look at Porsche:

911 Base, 911S, 911GTS, 911Turbo, 911 GT3, 911 GT3RS, 911 GT2RS

SEVEN performance tiers for the SAME model. And guess what? They sell plenty of all of them!

(I didn't even include the different variations of those models, such as Targa, AWD etc. just wanted to keep on topic with performance tiers).

Ummm... I'm just gonna guess that maybe you don't have kids?

As an enthusiast who is also a parent of two little ones there is no way in hell I would be a sedan (a coupe is absolutely out of the question) if there were a total package like the x3m on the market! You ever put a baby seat in and out of the back of a coupe? How about a 4 door sedan? Now how about an suv that is up higher with a far less tapered rear door window that makes for the ability to toss kids into a seat efficiently!

Also, you seen how much shit you need to haul around with two little kiddies? Good luck fitting all that shit in the boot of an m3 or even an m5!

To me the x3m is targeted at the enthusiast who also has a family and goes on long trips and has tons of shit in the back and a couple kids, why would they not make a vehicle like that, sounds perfect to me! Now excuse me while I get this meth operation off the ground so I can afford to buy one

Actually, many people just don't. They buy SUVs because they think they look "cool" and like the higher seating position. Even the rear seat in the X3 has less width than the 3 series, making it less practical for carrying passengers

You don't buy an X3... or a Q5, GLC, Discovery Sport, Velar, F-Pace, Macan or any other cute-sized SUV if you have more than 1 kid and can afford something bigger. Trunk space is dominated by one stroller, and the back seat is dominated by car seats. The front seats are a nanometer from the dash and it generally sucks.

So yes, generally, a small-medium sized SUV is fine for one kid, but really a more useful crap hauler than the equivalent sedan version with better ground clearance for bad weather climates. That's the niche it fills. X5-sized SUV's and larger, totally different argument.

Don't get me wrong... I embrace these models. I just don't think I'd pay more for an X3M than an M3.

Yep! X3M could be the perfect car where I live (Swiss Alps). There is already a lot of Macan and other sporty SUVs in my area. This time I will test drive G80 Competition and X3 (Competition if possible) before deciding.
You'll be waiting an other 3 years for the G80 Competition.
