Anyone have one of the FTP chargepipe kits? I have the same on my F10 and it fit well, but the F25 is much longer and convoluted.

Chargepipe popped at 7k rpm on a 5th to 6th upshift, throttle closure for torque reduction during upshift likely spiked charge pressure and well... you see... rest of the plastic flange pieces are on the freeway somewhere I suspect.

Still drove fine but of course zero boost, no CEL/30FF surprisingly enough but then I did stay out of the throttle thereafter knowing full well what happened.

As luck would have it I saved the factory charge pipe from my F10. I carefully cut it up and pried the soft pipe plastic away from the rigid throttle body flange and nipple and then cleaned them up just a little with a dremel, prepping the plastic for surgery.



I have a tube of Lord Fusor 142, plastic panel bonding adhesive I've used for a number of bumper repair operations. Quite expensive but confidently bonds plastic together when used correctly. Applied liberally and parts stuck together.

All fixed for the moment. I'll likely go ahead and order the FTP chargepipe kit so this doesn't happen again, but it should last until then without worry. Without a doubt stronger than factory supplied.

yeesh. sorry about the cp. i have an ftp, haven't installed it yet, though. still a little cold. managed to get my new brondex dp on though... sounds sick. it sounds like our driving style is similiar, (letting out of gas near the gear shift to reduce torque) so i'm wondering if i should push the CP install up a bit... i have a racechip ultimate also, currently in bypass.

There is no reason to lift off the throttle on a gear change with an auto, the DME/EGS do what is needed for you. Even with your foot to the floor it pulls timing 10+ degrees and backs of the throttle 40-50%. This is for torque reduction so the gear change can occur quickly and the clutch packs can have full line pressure before timing is advanced and the throttle is pinned open again.

The 8HP45 up shifts in about 2/10 of a second, while the whole timing retard, throttle closure process lasts 4/10 to 7/10 of a second depending on gear, torque being generated, and relatively pedal position at time of shift.

During stated period boost pre-throttle may spike as much as 50% or more before the bypass valve can act and release pressure.

That is likely what killed the 70k mi chargepipe.

I just went and kicked the snot out of it again, holding fine. IMO its probably stronger that before but I'm still replacing it. Glad I was driving it when it let go instead of the wife (its her vehicle, I drive the F10) because she would have freaked out.

Negative, her X3 is 100% stock at the moment.

I work at a BMW specialist, we see plenty of stock charge pipes fail like this on 1 and 3 series (typical enthusiast cars) but this is the first X3 I've seen explode.

I have a 2012 X3, stock, and the charge pipe exploded exactly like this yesterday!

I was cruising around 50mph, needed to pass, and the transmission downshifted and it popped.

limped it home, and the CEL came on with code p00BD.

Is the charge pipe easy to change out? I couldn't get a good look last night.

Yeah, its easy enough to change. You'll need to remove the main undertray for access to the cold side of the intercooler to release the charge pipe there.

Remove the air cleaner box and then wiggle, twist and pull the charge pipe up and out. The shape is odd but it is flexible and will feed out the top.

Going back in is a little more thought provoking but again just wiggle and twist to feed it in.

I had this issue on my E90 335i xDrive. I had no idea what it was at the time and went to the dealer thinking CPO would cover the issue. Of course it was a Chargepipe faliure NOT covered by CPO.
If I knew about the aftermarket CPs at the time(Summer '16) I would have limped my car home and ordered a stronger CP, have an Independent shop do the install and saved some money.

Just had the charge pipe let go on my wife's X3, pictures of ours look nearly identical to yours. I can't say it happened just cruising, I was getting everything I could get out of her and it let go on the 3-4 shift. Now the big question is, to replace with oem or find something better aftermarket.

Did you end up going with the FTP charge pipe kit or did you stick with the homemade pipe? If the FTP charge pipe, what's your experience been with it? I always prefer to upgrade rather than replace a part with something stock.

I went with the FTP pipe.

Fit and finish was great, zero issues and she takes all I give her now.

I have the same FTP set. I installed the charge pipe a few weekends ago. The turbo pipe looked HARD to do. How was it E90705? Also I have reservations that the FTP boost pipe has no flex in it unlike the stock one.

ThomasR, I initially just installed the charge pipe only. The stock boost pipe is pretty flexible but I did it all just myself. Take your time and wiggle here and there and you should be able to properly install it without issue.

I admit that it was a pain at first. Patience is key.

Our N55 X3 charge pipe separated at the throttle body flange. It didn’t explode like some I’ve seen posted here but the flange and pipe are separated about half way around. I ordered the FTP kit and will be here from Taiwan in 2 days. Can’t wait for the boost to be back to normal. I’ve been running Burger Motorsports intake and tune for a year or so and I guess I’m lucky that the charge pipe lasted this long.

Stock pipe didn't break or crack anywhere? Lucky. Would be unfortunate if it exploded WITH the MAF.

It seems the stock charge pipe is the same one used on the F30 N55 engine. Is there any reason why an Evolution Racewerks chargepipe for a F30 N55 engine (xDrive) would not fit in the F25 X3 N55?

The part numbers do match up I wondered and curious when I was looking for a aftermarket one that wouldn’t break. I did also see realoem uses the same part number. Those companies probably haven’t done any R&D to ensure fitment.

It’s just someone needs to confirm fitment.

Bumping this to see if anyone figured out if aftermarket charge pipe from other N55 vehicles would work.

From my research on real OEM and get BMW parts.com it looks like the charge pipe on X3/X4/435/335/M235 and a few others is exactly the same...

Huh? Do you not see the FTP charge pipe being talked about in this thread above? I have one on mine X3. Fits perfect.

I saw that, but there are literally non on the used market for F25 and they are $350 new. If for example we are able to fit the charge-pipe from an F30 it makes buying one much easier and much cheaper. I mean they are going for $100 on F30 forum. Also brand new charge-pipe for F30 are cheaper. I hope you see my argument.
