Tyre profile

I currently have 245/50/18 all round. I want to increase ride comfort so thinking of upsizing tyre profile to 235/55/18.

Has anyone done this? The overall diameter difference is less than 2% which is lower than what most reccomend at 3%.

Big advantage is the new 235/55 tyre has 7mm more sidewall.

Any opinions?

we need feedback from other members, I doubt the 7mm more will give you more comfort, in a noticeable way.

-no run flat should be the first thing, and get some tires plugs and a compressor.

-Select a touring tire.

All this is subjective, I have a car with performance low profile tire, dropped low, solid engine mounts, stage 1 clutch and its very comfortable imo...

So I have two sets of wheels/tires for summer/winter.

245/50-18 for summer
245/55-17 for winter
Both sets are NON run flat

I don't feel much difference in ride quality.

E60425d I am planning the same change to 235/55-18 this spring after removing my winter tires. My OE Goodyear runflats are almost gone, so I am getting quotes for the 235's. As you noted there is just a small increase in the tire diameter, but the taller sidewall will provide a better ride. Also, the 235/55 offers the same load rating (100) as the OE 245/50. X3's were sold with 225/60-17's, so a change in width by 10 to 20 mm apparently doesn't matter that much. Let me know the results, as I am hoping for a more comfortable ride after the change.

BTW, my winter tires are 225/60-17 non runflats and the ride difference between them and the OE 18's runflats is huge (much better), so hence my rationale for looking into higher profile 18's for summer replacements.

Just replace them with non-runflats 245/50 18, and your comfort concerns will be gone.

A thinner tire with higher sidewall not only will look ugly from the side, but it will make you lose in the driving dynamics department, as your vehicle will perform worse than it did (and it doesn't do great for a car already, but does well for an "SUV").

Where did you see a stock X3 with 225s from factory?

I am way passed the boy-racer stage and care little about cool. In fact, I am not that fond of 18" wheels regardless of tire profile. The closer I can get to the ride comfort of my 225/60-17 winter tires, the better.

As for spoiling an X3's handling dynamics by going from a profile of 50 to 55, I really question that assertion. For everyday driving, it's doubtful that one would note this tiny difference in width and height. Appearance, on the the other hand, is more subjective.

Not sure if the 225s were ever stock on US X3's, I know that 17" wheels are offered on X3 marketed in Europe. Moreover, 225/60-17 is the exact equivalent of 245/50-18 in terms of overall diameter and load rating, so that width and profile would be the logical choice for use on 17's wheels. Of course, BMW might use 235/55-17's strictly for appearance sake.

Just curious what tires are you running on your 225/60-17s? The entire US is out of the stock 245/55-17 =/

Non-Run Flats. For run-flats i'm already considering the driveguards but want to see if theres something else thats more compelling.
