Oil leak???

Just had my car serviced by my usual mechanic and he noticed an oil leak. He said it was coming from crank seal ?

Has anyone else seen this problem or had this problem? Should this be a concern?

It doesn’t look a lot. X3M is 3 years old and only covered 31,000 miles! So I’m shocked to see an oil leak..

Any help would be appreciated

I literally just got back from the shop 30 minutes ago with the same issue, what are the odds...

Possible rear main seal from the location but it's a really small leak as it's still showing full on the oil gauge after 2000 miles.
They cleaned it and will check it again in 3000 miles when I get my oil changed again to see if it's come back.

2020 with 42000 miles.

A RMS leak fix is an expensive job. Hope it's not that.

I’ve managed to get under the car and wipe it off. It was very easy and the oil was very golden coloured so thinking it is a recent leak…I’m going to monitor it now and see what happens and how bad the leak is.

So I’ve managed to really have a look tonight and it appears the problem is bigger than I first thought….

I’m not sure if the pics are clear enough but had anyone got any ideas on how bad this is and what it is? It’s situated under the car right next to exhaust looks like the engine but maybe gearbox I can’t tell as I’m lying on the drive under car with a phone torch 😂

I’m off to drive up north for a holiday this weekend with the family…the oil isn’t leaking over the driveway or anything like that…will I be ok to drive it?

If it's not dripping onto the ground, it's a small leak, and you'll be fine. If it's between the engine and transmission, it's your rear main seal. If it's only 3 years old, you have a 2021? Why aren't you taking it to the dealer instead of your 'regular mechanic'. Isn't it still covered under warranty?

The same exact leak was noticed by the dealership on my nephews 2020 X4M, during a differential and transfer case fluid service at 30K. The service technician mentioned “not to be concerned” but will keep an eye on it. The dealer mentioned the CPO warranty may not cover the repair if it’s not actively leaking oil.

Just outside of warranty bud, it was 3 years in January. I am tempted though to write an email of complaint to BMW UK as it’s disgraceful an M car with 32k miles and just over 3 years old is leaking

I would surely do the same thing if my X3 MC experiences the same thing at that low mileage level.

So the car went in to bmw today for investigation at £120! They’ve had it day and just called me to say they can find the origin of the oil leak and they think it’s just oil sweat?!?! Oil sweat what the f**k is that?! Sounds like bollocks! I told them I’m refusing to pay £120! They’ve investigated nothing

Anyone ever heard of that BS?!

It's a rear main leak, it's a BMW, this is basically par for the course lol. You can either live with it and add oil when necessary, or fix it. Unless you run it low on oil you are not going to damage anything.

Sucks they won't cover it, it is a big enough job, transmission needs to come out.

I’m not that familiar with bmw engines so basically it’s prone to it and I’ve just got to keep an eye on it

You're not going to hurt anything by waiting. If it starts dripping on the ground, it might get annoying. The vehicle will let you know when/if the oil is down by one litre, then you can add another, if it gets to that point. You can also check the oil level through the idrive system every few weeks if you want to be proactive about it.
