Said goodbye to my beloved f15 X5 today. Was a fun three years. Was deciding between two cars to replace the X5. 2020 g05 X5 or a 2020 g01 x3 m40i.
Went to test drive both and the m40i was fun to drive. Was used to the size of the X5 but wanted something quick and nimble. The m40i checked off a lot of the boxes however the dealer that I get my cars from were not budging much on the m40i from a deal perspective. I asked to test drive the x3m comp I saw and fell in love. The ride was stiff but such a blast to drive. I liked the m seats but didn't love them. Something felt off so I knew I couldn't commit They had a non comp x3m in stock in my favorite color combo. Grey over black and regular x3m seats They actually gave me a great deal compared to the deal they offered on the m40i Signed sealed delivered. And now I'm a proud driver of an x3m |

Correct. In my second attachment it shows the non competition m sport seats. They still have good bolstering. And I’m not even sure if the M seats have lumbar support. Perhaps someone with them can chime in.
In a non comp x3m you have the option to upgrade to the m seats (also they are Merino vs the vernasca on the non comp seats) |

That is vernasca. And now I think I realize the difference. The upper bolsters which I assume are to brace your upper torso are depicted in the configurator. However in real life my seats do not have much of an upper bolster. Maybe that's what was driving me nuts

Yeah the online BMW pictures seems to give the impression of more shoulder bolstering than there actually is, although I find that your body tends to take a while to adjust to new seats and that most of our discomfort comes from bad posture.
Chest out, shoulders back...get that sternum pointing upwards.

It's definitely noticeable. If you are considering. Go for an extensive test drive. I don't regret it but be warned it's not as plush as the X5 was (although I feel a lot more connected to the road now) I went for a little drive last night because I'm eager to get to 1200 miles. And by the end of the drive I feel myself overall getting used to the suspension |

I am about to make a similar move from a 2017 X5 M50d to the X3M competition. I absolutely love my M50d, the X3M will be a nice change though, I’m grateful to drive such cars, initial thoughts from a 48hr test drive:
The size of the X3M was maybe refreshing, a little smaller. Performance and exhaust note possibly better than the m50 ( Even In UK spec with filter) but I do like the sound of the M50d when you wind it up, artificial or not I don’t know but it always sounds good but not intrusive. I did find my M50d was quicker off the mark in that 1000-1800rpm range, no slouch by any means but the X3M will soon cover that ground as we know. Love the X3M seats, also prefer the single tailgate compared to the X5 split. The ride quality is noticeably different, the M50d has air suspension and is such a pleasant car to drive, X3M noticeably stiffer set up, not crashy over bumps more a pitching from the chassis setup? On good surfaces the X3M was so precise with its steering, the X5 needs a bit more input & had more body roll. Looking forward to the X3M delivery in a few weeks but for now, enjoying my X5. |
