Thumbs down Felt like wheel well liners, why?

Ok, I assume the felt like material wheel well liners is cheap and quiets down tire noise in the cabin, but it's a sponge for picking up dirt and grit.

It was warm today so I decided to wash my vehicle. I was using a electric power washer with undercarriage wand to give the wheel wells and undercarriage a good rinsing. While rinsing the wheel wells, allot of brown/grey dirt kept pouring out. I spent ~5 minutes per wheel wheel and never got clear water to run out. I'll wait till spring for a more thorough undercarriage rinse since we're still in winter here. It's a 2011 I got used last spring in near new condition with less than 60k miles, and was extremely well cared for though I doubt the wheel wells and under carriage have ever been power washed. But really, this felt like material can hold a ton of dirt and is a bad choice of material for that reason.

I'm not sure when BMW started using these felt type liners, but I'd much prefer the typical plastic wheel well liners that don't absorb dirt/salt/grit.

Correct. Apart from road-noise, they are also used to limit the loud noise of rocks when they hit plastic liners.
