This is listed in their ad.

Installation Method:
Badge Only:
With the grills clean and free of debris, simply peel the adhesive backing tape from the back of the badge and place onto your grill with firm pressure to ensure the badge does not move around. Enjoy!

I would probably use my own 3M tape!

It needs something to mount to otherwise its just hanging there looking janky lol. I need to get a 3d printed mount made, then it will look great.

I’ve got this on mine and it looks perfectly ok. I was worried the tape wouldn’t hold as there are minimal contact points but it’s been there a year, and so far is still solid.

It’s a simple stick-on as the seller says - I have a pre-LCI with active grilles so only a single vertical to attach to, and a printed backing plate between the slats wouldn’t work.

Why would a backing plate between the slats not work ?

I should qualify - a backing plate as deep as the OEM ones above stops the active grille slats from rotating, and a more simple flat plate bolted/screwed through to the front plate isn’t possible as the active slats sit flush against the back of the fixed ones when they’re closed. The qualified bit is that a custom plate between the slats that wasn’t as deep could work.

My hesitation in going for a fixed in backing plate was partly laziness and partly concern that I might mark or damage the slats in some way - a glued on option felt like the least risky, and the adhesive has proved to be pretty durable so far.

I have an LCI with active slats and OE backing plate moulded in the grille.

The eBay badge is actually better suited to the double slatted grille (LCI?) as it sits across four contact points rather than two.

I also quite like the less generic ‘M40i’ designation rather than the M badge that’s on the LCI models.

Yeah, I think the badge is a moulded part of the entire grille, rather than an add-on

It’s is, but my point was it doesn’t interfere with the active slats.

Garage List
That’s a job for a 3D printer then just order the padded M badge.

Car washes? Wash your mouth out sir......

My beloved M40i is only cossetted with snow foam bathing and gentle hand massages...

Being serious, I do tend to be slightly careful with the badge but not overly so - just avoid catching it with a wash mitt or polishing cloth and don't spray directly with the pressure washer lance.

The other factor will inevitably be climate - here in Scotland we have a fairly unexciting range of temperatures, 14F to 80F is the maximum range, with low humidity. Other more harsh conditions could make the limited glue contact points fail.
