Good to see a serious electrical vehicle from BMW. Now. If they follow the over the air software update model, similar to Tesla and create a good interstate charging infrastructure, we will have sometime more serious than the iPace.

For sure, there is great uncertainty and doubt.

Not until they really sell $35000 electric car in mass volume.

Even so, other car manufacturers have much batter chance and capability to overtake Tesla's sales.

Tesla's only hope is from their battery giga factory. Car is not really their focus in a long run.

Like I said, Tesla is just a trend for now. (and it was the pretty much only option for electric car until last couple of years)

Wait until people have more choices.

If it's the same price, I would choose ix3 over model 3 any day.
Fear not... Tesla is not a trend but a disruptor and a game changer.

Just look at the sales they are stealing from MERCEDES, BMW, and AUDI w/ the Model 3 alone.

Doubtful.

BMW definitely wants you to come into the stealership.

Not everybody can afford $55k car with back up car in their garage.

In the US, majority of people lives in condo or apartment building w/o their own garage and drive Camry, Accord or minivans at $20~30k.

Again, they are not a mainstream player yet. Not until they can sell $35k car and make profit out of it.

It's a show off car.

I'm pretty sure its an optical illusion so its harder to notice the creases and bodylines. Rather than putting on thick coverings over the car, the camo swirl does the same job of hiding details while being thin and light.
I always wondered, what happens if they show the jumper details? I doubt Mercedes or Audi will go and copy the style. What prevents it from happening once the vehicle launches?

I think it's more so they don't reveal the design ahead of time.

Everything we’ve read about this vehicle indicates it’s a single motor vehicle, i e two wheel drive. Forget everything else. If this thing doesn’t come out with AWD after years in development it’s DOA. So I hope Bmw is listening.

It better be Electric xDrive (AWD)

At 270 HP, you are on to something.

Point taken.

The $35K T3SLA is nowhere to be seen.

^^This.
I take long road trips and want to take my EV everywhere. It wasnt practical with the previous gen, including mode S but the model 3 with 310 mile range means I have to stop once every 3.5 hours or so. Yes the stops will be a bit longer but very doable.

The ix3 would have done a lot better with a 400 mile range. And little more power - hope the have a m performance or full M ix3 in the pipeline.

That would sap range in an EV pretty quick.
Well, i'm living in Norway. On my 1 gen i3, i had a range of 150 km in the summer, with AC, never any eco settings! we have 25+ degrees C.
During the winther, i had 90-100km range, both are with full batteries, this was with a 1 year old i3, with 10k on the road.
Drove the Jaguar i-pace last week (doing an article on it) impressive car. But yes, the echo system of the EV is the weak spot. Because a larger vehicle with a bigger battery needs more kw and or hours, than the smaller cars with less batteries in them. Tesla have a good foundation in Norway with their chargers. Having said that, CCS is coming along, with even more kw, than Tesla. Give it another 2-3 years, and they will be fullfill pretty much everyones need to charge. As for the I-pace, 1 minute was about 1 % of juice on the battery, as with a 50kw charger.
Besides - the I-pace is here now, the iX3 is not here within 2020. And it looks and feels great.

Tesla is definitely on my short list next time around.

I think Telsa's model 3 is in trouble once BMW starts selling the EV 3 series.

Still better looking than that hideous i3.

The i8 is beyond what most people want to pay for an EV and the i3, see me previous comment.

Grille on the prototype seems to be like the G05 grille, perhaps?

Rather than like the one from the Concept iX3.

Exciting times

Finally BMW, i have been nagging my dealer about this car for so long now, good to see it being tested and optimized for real world.

You can dislike Tesla or like it, it matters not but what Tesla have done is force the other car brands to take electric cars seriously, and kill some of the old myths about them, and change peoples attitude towards them.

I my self am actually thinking of getting an i3s REX on leasing for 3 years with the upcoming 120 AH battery due to having already one diesel car at home we don't need two of them so for the looong trips go with the diesel and for commuting the i3s, and then after 3 years when i'm in the market for a new car again, then i can browse a lot of fun and hopefully new solid state battery cars out there and choose a good looking sedan EV with at least 500+ km in one charge.

They say the years between 2020-2025 will be the electric car revolution years. So ordering one now get it in 2019 then around year 2023-2024 just pick and choose from the rest.

Elon Musk deserves the credit for that, and I hope that history remembers him for it, much like Nikolai Tesla (with all the controversy [and haters]). He really is an innovator and turned his dream into a reality.

Well, if you think stavanger is full of EV, try Bergen, even nicer town and it is the EV "capitol", aka most EV in any town in Norway.

As with Tesla model 3, is was bound to be a hit, IF they could handle production, well they obviously failed. And Musk if feeling the heat, the poor guy.
It's kinda sad, they come up with great stuff, but didn't manage the huge demand and raising the production numbers/quality to the needed level.
If BMW is serious with the 3 series EV, they could do some damage.
But MB (producing PHEV one month in a year, very flexible...) and others giants aren't to serious about it, they still want to earn money = selling ICE.
Selling EV, it is still early days, so it's not generating enough money to really gather interest among the "elite" car players.
So coming up with EV is kinda more branding and marketing, than selling/producing it in huge numbers.

When I think of an EV, the brand that comes to mind is TESLA. That will be hard to undo.
