8 lbs/hp seems to be the BMW M trend zone.

What a shame BMW.
651 lbs is a lot. Your truck weighs almost 15% more than this SUV.

Is your chart using manufacturer weights for other vehicles? If so that chart is useless. Manufacturer weights include more fuel(90% full tank) and 75kg(165lbs) for average driver. You need to add another 200lbs+ to get curb weight.

Indeed - considering many M enthusiasts lust after an Evo 2 e30 M3, which weighed in at 2646lbs fully loaded with options (or 2000lbs lighter than the X3M).

A Clio RS manages to weigh in at 2300lbs and still meet modern safety standards?

Unfortunately, we don't get those lightweight cars here in the States. Our overly-rigorous safety standards need to justify some fat bitch causing a head-on collision because she's texting in one hand and slamming a diet Pepsi Big Gulp in the other.

It's a matter of perspective. Nobody expects an X3 to be 2300 lbs. 4400 is a decent figure for its size and capabilities.

To listen to some people's consternation about weight you would think they are being asked to lift the cars over their heads. I defy anyone to tell 200 (or even 400) lbs of difference in responsible public road driving. And anyone who is serious about tracking a car would not be using an SUV.

Safety standards plus all the extra bracing to have these cars survive massive g-force and twisting force that they are capable of. Ppl longing for the era of super light cars....
those cars were barely even capable of the lap times and acceleration and braking force. Think about all the sports cars from 90s or early 2000s that the x3m can run circles around. The chassis need to keep up with the power. The engineers are focused on absolute capability even if it means they feel heavier and are in fact heavier... no one would want 4000 lb x3m if it developed rattles, creaks and was wobbly in the corners cuz the chassis was flexing all over the place.

I'm driving a rental Clio for a few more weeks until my X3MC arrives. It gets phenomenal gas mileage and is so light, you don't really need to slow down in the corners. With the 5 speed manual you can actually get it move a bit despite its anemic engine. The thing drives like a go cart. Not bad for a cheap little thing while I await the permenant solution arriving soon!
