Ah OK!
Although your manual seems to be covering both petrol and diesel, so maybe it's not specific to your car???

M40i Pops & Bangs

Quite possibly a error in manual yes, it all reads as one on app, I just couldn't fit it on one page, first section is saying it auto cleans it then goes on to describe a manual clean situation if the warning light comes on

Doesn't really matter I suppose but would be nice to have a definite answer if one is fitted

M40i Pops & Bangs

Just been onto the genius online who checked and confirmed the petrol X3 was the first BMW to have a GPF fitted and was from launch of new model which makes sense as realoem refer to it on all build months listed on EU models

Don't know whether to be happy or sad about it, probably more happy as less particulates being pumped out and still drives the same

Gave them my vin to check but if any owners of pre-July built M40i's want to check it out as well and see if you get same answer

To confirm then, are they saying that ALL M40i's have a GPF fitted?

That's what they said, all had them from launch of new model but worth others checking

Would mean that loss of power and loss of pops/bangs for latter cars are down to something else required to meet WLTP, as I understand it GPF is only there to reduce particulate matter

Edit- Would just be EUR models this applies to

Thats interesting as when I spoke with my dealer he said the X3 was the first BMW to be compliant to the new regs and was so from its launch and BMW were on the ball with them while other manufactures weren't.
So to confirm it needs an early X3m40i owner to take a look and physically find out.
I pick mine up tomorrow can't wait sleepless nights etc.

Yes, if they've always had a GPF, what made them tune the engine differently to reduce the power??

That makes sense, maybe it's just the official tests were carried out for August models onwards this year and both are identical or there are some other tweaks needed to pass WLTP?

Wouldn't know where to start to look, Realoem diagram has it attached to cat, I also looked at US models and the 2018 EUR M140i and they don't have it shown

Good luck with the pick up

The GPF on it's own wouldn't make it WLTP compliment, Perhaps other measures to pass the test have reduced power or it is just a new way of testing power and in fact the same? performance figures are identical

Could also be a red herring and I got incorrect info?

Anyone know what a GPF looks like, Had a quick look underneath, couldn't see any thing obvious, there's a meshed can where it rises up to engine as picture but is this the cat or GPF?

That looks like a flex pipe. Don't think that would be the GPF.

I keep saying right or wrong the power drop is probably just down to a new way of testing, it seemed strange the USA has always had the M40i listed as 355hp but for some reason Europe had it down at 360hp but now it's dropped to the same as US and they definitely don't have a GPF over there and performance is the same

For what it's worth, based on only a day of use, I will say that the engine still sounds marvellous whatever mode I have tried, and even though I haven't induced any loud, distinct pops and bangs yet (maybe never?) there is a lovely throaty burble on overrun. I am more than satisfied.

The petrol X3 didn't have the filter fitted from the start of production. The 2 litre petrol models received it first, which caused lengthy delays for quite a few people. The M40i received the filter much later, around August I believe, and the cars with the filter are the ones with the lower power figure. Whether that is due to the filter or down to an alternative means of measurement I can't say. I do know that my M40i, delivered in April, does not have a filter fitted.

Someone asked for a Cold Start video.

I cannot find their request now, but here it is anyway

Still sounds nice to me!

A bit of an update since this...it’s now done 3,000 miles. I feel that it has become louder and more aggressive sounding, possibly in my head, but I’m sure that it is louder.

Could this be simply a math conversion? 355 hp in US (Imperial/British unit) = 360 hp (metric) using the conversion factor of 1.014

I read through the whole threads and found them entertaining :

From what I read, There were definitely members whom genuinely wanted to help the OP at the beginning, but were baffled (even frustrated) by the OP's seemingly lack of interest in even giving their suggestion a try.
