Is it same as factory shipped.. or is inside different. One photo above showed grey interior paint. Can you verify? Same flat black or gloss grey or something else?

I'm having the exhaust replaced under warranty. However my service advisor told me the exhaust needs to be cut. Is that correct?

From what I'm seeing the original factory exhaust has the resonator mid pipe and muffler section all welded together, whereas the replacement muffler section part includes a pipe clamp...so original exhaust would be cut and muffler section clamped over existing pipe.

Some folks are saying entire exhaust is replaced...but the only way they could be doing that is if the entire midpipe and muffler section of the exhaust were both replaced, which seems like unnecessary added expense and I wouldn't think BMW would approve that.

The dealership replaced only one side muffler since the other side wasn't flaking. However in doing so the replacement muffler sticks out slightly further. Now I have to take it back in to have them adjust it.

Having this issue as well on my 2020.
Car is leased so I’m not going through hassle of fixing it.

Why is it only the left side flaking?

I think we all agree this shouldn't happen but I'm not sure replacing the muffler is worth the potential of it happening again, or getting a muffler with other issues like tips that are crooked and require yet another service visit.

If it happens to mine I think I will spend a few minutes with some high heat flat black paint and call it good. If it peels in 6 months I will invest another 3 minutes. Some will say it's under warranty and I make BMW fix everything and that's fine too.

No damage caused by anyone, this is a brand new exhaust fitted a month ago. It would appear it's just a paint quality issue on this one.
Its good that they are changing it for you, hopefully the replacement will be ok

Every single car I've owned with black exhaust tips have flaked. It happened with my R8, C63 and judging by this thread, is potentially only a matter of time until it happens to my X3M

6 months. Winter did it in. Likely moisture getting in under the paint due to expansion and contraction along with dew. Probably will end up taking a rotary to it to scuff up the metal real good and then use a more durable paint in hopes that it sticks.

What's your paint of choice? I'm thinking Rustoleum flat engine black if I can find it. My 2019 x3 M40i has had it for about a year, starting at about 12k. I really don't want the dealership to touch an otherwise good exhaust system after the problems I had with the HPFP on my wife's diesel.

I'd probably opt for a BBQ paint that will hold up to heat. I'd sand down the metal and then clean with brake cleaner to get it nice and bare and ready for paint.

Sad day for me.
My tips are flaking and it's pretty bad. Does anyone have detailed info to share on how to fix these ourselves?

I know BBQ paint or Rust Oleum but any prep, what did you use specifically?
Thanks!

I've removed the flaking paint on my 2018. Quite like the stainless look.

This happened to my 2021 X3 M40 (build Nov'20) with ~20k on it; BMW replaced the muffler under warranty (muffler & tips assembly is a single unit, they cut the old one off and attached the new one with clamps). Hopefully doesn't happen to the new one as well!

Mine are the shadowline/black. Don't have pics but looked really similar to the ones posted in this thread. Looks brand new now, with a flat black interior finish.
