Car likes to wander on the highway?
To preface this, I have a ‘21 Xdrive30i with OEM 19” wheels and OEM Pirelli Cinturato P7 RFs. I have the standard lane departure warning, which I believe is not the same as the lane keep assist.
I feel like my car likes to wander on the highway and I’m constantly having to make tiny steering adjustments to recenter it. Could this be the RFs screwing with me? I keep it in Comfort mode. My tires are all inflated to the recommended pressure. I drive the same route to work and don’t have this issue in my Toyota Highlander or Prius, that I’m having in the BMW. The alignment is fine, I can let go of the wheel and it will not dart left or right. But it just seems that as I’m cruising along, hand on the wheel, the cars likes to wander. Has anyone experienced the same or similar? I’m hoping it’s just a characteristic of the RunFlats and nothing else. I know most people will say ditch the RFs, but that’s just wasteful. I’ll wear them out first. Besides. I have a set of 20’s on the way. I’m considering staying with RFs on those for peace of mind. Simply because I’ve gotten a flat when I came out to my car afterwork and had to change it in the parking garage that a tow truck would never fit in, due to the low ceiling. |

There is another thread with the same issue. I think they stated the car was twitchy. Now I have had 6 other BMWs one being a M3. I now have a X3-M40i and on the highway it is not fun to drive. I have the same issue constantly correcting the steering. On the other thread one person said to lower the tire pressure so I went down 2 psi, no difference. So I hear ya. Just to add it is not the road, even on freshly paved road I have the same issue.
The M3 would tram line so I knew enough to steer away from the lines in the road. |

I have noticed my X3 is pretty bad relative to other cars... including other BMWs i have owned and wonder myself why it is.
Run flats (which I'll be ditching soon) + wide tires = bad tramlining it seems Tire pressure adjustments can help but its relative and may not make a huge difference in feel.... im running 35/38 on stock summer 20" RFTs... i could go down to 32/35 if i wanted but drive mostly highway so i like the pressure i run now.

It stays relatively straight when I let got off the wheel. It just seems to like to wander at higher speeds on the highway. I’ll try lowering my tire pressure to see if it helps. My initial thought is the RFs causing this. I think I’ll use non-RFs on my 20” wheels when they arrive and will report back. Thanks to all who have responded. |

It's an alignment issue, I started a thread about it on the g20 forum a while back. These cars come out the factory with wonky alignments, namely mis matched toe settings or toe out. You want even toe in left/right and a 0 degree thrust angle and the car will track nice and straight without the need for micro corrections.

I personally don't think my "issue" is alignment, but when I get some aftermarket wheels/tires in a few months I'll get the alignment checked. FWIW - I have a 2008 328i e90.... I have never had an alignment done on the car. ever. in 136,000 miles of driving... and it drives perfectly fine.

On my gt4 I run toe out as it's a track car, which has the reverse effect - the car wants to turn. Check my thread start history, I made a full investigation and posted an alignment solution. My car is a G20 but the platform is the same. The wandering drove me nuts but once I had a proper geo on the car it was night and day difference. Try it! Edit - here is the thread - https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1892651 Only reason I'm reading the X3 section is I'm considering an X3 m340i when my lease is up, so nice to see the issues are the same lol Last edited by Montaver; 07-13-2022 at 09:19 AM.. |

Mine is brilliant on asphalt. On newly constructed grooved concrete it dashes around a bit. Anyone else have this same experience?
