X3 jumped timing

Hello everyone.
i just picked up a 2008 X3 with 90K that suffered from a shreadded serpentine belt, which went through the front seal, and supposedly jumped timing. From what I've read, its guaranteed to have bent valves. If the valves are bent, I'm wondering if it would be best to remove head with the engine in the car, or tale the engine out to do this repair ? I know the pan has to come off as well, to clean out all the pieces of belt. Has anyone removed the head of an E83 ( with the N52 engine ) while still in the car ? I saw a post of someone that did it on a 2004, leaving the exhaust front pipe attached to the head, but that was on a M54. Just wondering what the best approach is.
Thanks,
Scot
