The patch that I was using was from BMW Tech Services — I think they probably use similar backend developers. I know from the Feature Installer that it was failing on the third step of the process, which was trying to connect to the NBT HU over the SSH port.

At moment, there is not a solution for latest 19-11-xxx firmware.

I wish I would have known -- but I'm guessing they wouldn't refuse to do the safety recall on my wishes. Really annoyed about it. CarPlay is silly looking when it isn't used in full screen.

Fortunately for me (shameless!) the X3 is my wife's car, and I have the newer iDrive 7 in my 330i.

Agree. Fullscreen carplay is one of my favorite features. Would rather have a faulty backup camera. I'm going to request that they not update when I bring it in for service next.

I tried to have Bimmer America code this, and they couldn't figure it out. They flashed the wrong firmware to my iDrive unit, and then had to re-flash it back to stock... 6+ harrowing hours later I gave up.

The BMW nav is good enough at this point that I've given up on CarPlay. If CarPlay isn't full screen, it's a waste as far as navigation goes. I do use it for playing music and making calls, though.

Is it possible to have CarPlay just for nav and music, but no calls ? I prefer to use native BMW inbound/outbound call system as it is also supporting gestures.

No, once you're connected to Carplay then all calls and messages go through that system.
