Recall cause; Software error in the DME.

Thank you! Indeed, the GWS module is coming from Germany and was told it will be 4-5 weeks.

Just checked with my SA and he responded that my 2019 X3 M40i (October 2018 build) is not included in the recall. No other info to report.
I continue to be surprised at how these very early 2018 models seem to be the most reliable of the bunch, anecdotally. I was nervous about getting one of the first batch off the line, but perhaps they get more attention before the volume ramp. Not that a software issue would have anything to do with volume, but there was a batch that were recalled for missing screws, for example.

Oh wait, I misread that! Mine is an '18 built in October '17.

Shortly after the 1st service (which also consisted of a S/W update) performed on the X, we noticed an intermittent CEL. Oddly enough the vehicle didn't identify or display the code nor did the Connected Drive system. No one from BMW ever contacted us regarding the CEL and as mentioned above, it would toggle on and off over a weeks time. Now the light stays on constantly and we no longer have Comfort Access. This corresponds with a message indicating, "Comfort Access Reduced".

Obviously I'll need to make an appointment and take it in for diagnostics. Just not sure if this is related to the OP.

-- Update:
Appt. set for tomorrow morning. Will update with info. Prod.date on this vehicle is: 2018-02-10

For those that have had this done – does it erase your coding? Are you able to recode?

Girlfriend called for the annual maintenance the other day and was told they’ll need more time for updating, so it is likely this.

It wiped out all my coding and some iDrive Profile info.

More importantly, are you able to recode? I’m assuming you’re using Bimmercode?

Yes, I've redone my prior coding. But it also wiped out m prior dealer coding for hatch opening only when car is unlocked. PITA.

That is quite a pain, but thanks for letting us know that the update does not affect ability to recode. I currently have an appointment on the 19th to get some addressed and BMW mentioned they would update the software at the same time. It would’ve been really annoying if I couldn’t re-do things like save last ASS setting afterwards.

Just picked up the X3 this morning.

The following service was performed:
SI 122019 Control Units (DME) Per DCS/KEY/AIR. Completed.
SI 130219 Check the tank vent valve line. Replaced. 13-90-8-681-537

Waiting on the following parts:
"Went through test plan for radiator blinds. Both top and bottom blinds are faulty. Top radiator blinds are on back order, coming from Germany."

And the root cause for Reduced Comfort Access:
"While in test plan for check engine light, went into test plan for comfort access left exterior line disconnected. Removed L/R tire, fender lining and found rodent damage on wiring going to left exterior aerial. Repaired rodent damaged wiring. Comfort access is working as designed at this time."

Total labor and parts: 669.02

Had mine updated last week. Most of the coding got wiped out, but I was able to flash back to STG1 with BM3 which was my main concern.

This does not make me feel comfortable.
BMW cannot even update their own software, how is this possible. Multiple tries and then maybe...
Tesla do over the air updates all the time.

I was going to ask them to make sure my 2018 has the latest software, not any more...

I had the software update done on my M40i today. They ran into issues the first try but apparently that was due to the two fuses I had pulled. After they put those in, there were no issues with the update.

Mine got updated this week as well. The only coding I lost is the ASS memory. In the past when I have gotten updates, they have always updated everything. I wonder why it was different this time?

Why don't they save a lot of money and people's time and do these software updates over the air ? A new model with old approach to tech

Thanks for letting us know.

I asked them not to do this update when we had our recent maintenance appt. I'll need to bring it back and allow more time, especially since it took a day+ to code the hatch opening unlock alone. Hopefully it doesn't take as long as it did for blau_340i.

Shouldn't be a problem to recode with e-sys, right?

Did you have 3rd party Carplay activation?
My car was kept for 2 weeks over Christmas because they could not complete software upgrade.

I’m guessing it might have been due to Carplay.... so I no longer use 3rd party carplay activation.
