I wear polarized sunglasses and rarely use navigation on a day to day basis. Only potentially useful information in the HUD is the tachometer but it feels laggy and artificial so I end looking at the dash anyway. So for me I could live without the HUD.

Chose it on my 2 x 3 F30 and miss it on my US rental car - any time I have to drive a car that doesn't have HUD, I'm not happy.

The HUD Display on a 2018 X3 M40i version 6 is almost useless
I generally like the HUD display, just not on my car. If you don't use navigation, it shows the speed you drive (useless); it's pretty pathetic, especially since all the BMWs in Europe, even in older models, have a much more advanced HUD. I just came back from Switzerland, and my cousin gave me his 6-year-old BWM, and that HUD had much more information. Apparently, (don't quote me), BWM insists that it is impossible to upgrade version 6 to 7 (too much hardware/software) with some more advanced features.

I am pretty sure, that HUD info is the same in US an Europe... What model was your cousins 6 year old bmw? What another info it showed to compare your own one?

I am a new 2017 X3 owner. My vehicle doesn’t have HUD. I’m wondering if there is some way to install it now? And if so, what is the ballpark cost? We have it on our X3M Competition and I really like it! Feedback appreciated!

To G01, there is quite many videos in youtube how to do it. Not impossible, but lots of work and money to get it done.

i have it in a family members bmw... i think its good in the sense that you don't have to look away from the road... but i can only use it at night because my polarized sungnlasses which are also prescription do not show the heads up... just remember that... i certainly don't think its a necessary option

I keep a relatively cheap pair of non-polarized sunglasses (Shady Rays) in the cars for those times when I want to use the HUD on sunny days.

I wear polarized sunglasses, however if i turn up the Hud brightness to FULL, and offset it slightly, then I see all the information, suggestion in the manual or even on this forum. Mind I live in South Wales, UK, where its mainly raining lol, although we're having some crazy sunshine and heat atm - first car with HUD, and I love it.

We recently purchased a '22 Chevrolet Suburban, with pretty much every option possible, including their HUD.
I know comparing a mass-produced domestic, even a very high-end one, to a luxury brand like BMW, is apples-to-carburators, but the difference is dramatic. The utility, the visual appeal, the clarity, and the overall experience the iDrive 7 (and even in my old iDrive 6) HUD is night-and-day-and-night-again, compared to the best systems the domestics are putting in their vehicles. There are always little complaints, but it's easy to forget just how good the tech in these vehicles is. |

The HUD came in my X3 that I purchased off the lot. It was not a feature I was looking for. It just came with what was available at the time I needed to purchase.
As mentioned in many threads, polarized sunglasses and the HUD dont play well together. I adjusted the HUD and can just barely see the display with the polarized glasses. I usually drive with the polarized, but switch to other glasses for driving with Nav. In most cases the HUD is useless. It displays little information, not very customizable with information, and not very valuable information. The only caveat comes in with Navigation. It is very helpful if you are doing Nav in a place you are not familiar with. Otherwise, speed limit, music, RPMs, etc are bits of information that dont get dramatically improved via HUD. If choosing between Driver Assistance [Blind Spot/Lane Change] ($900) + Park Distance Control ($750) Vs Head UP Display ($1600), I would go with the first two versus HUD. |

I love the HUD just don't understand why BMW removed the speed limit information in the X3 but left it every other model.
My old 5GT had it, my wife X1 has a HUD and SLI but its just not there on the X3 unless you get the Driver assistance packaged but in all other models you didn't need to add that to get the feature. Plus its annoying it 'can' be retrofitted using a code but BMW themselves won't sell me the code to do the upgrade I'd happily pay for. Yes BMW refusing money is a mystery to me as well. |

My HUD is the same, absolutely useless unless you have the navigation running. Yes you can change radio / tracks etc but when your not it shows the speed in really small font and if cruise is on what it’s set too with the cruise symbol. If I was buying new it would be down the bottom of the list as it’s crap!

Love the HUD!! speed, rev indicator, cruise control/follow distance indicator, and media selector, etc on the right side, and turn-by-turn when using BMW or Apple navigation. It can be distracting - depending on your "style" of focus; I limit myself in duration focused on it - same as I would a screen in the car.
I do wish it had a better auto-dimming feature. I often want it pretty bright during the day, but more dim than it is at night, but there is no way am I paging through menus every day. |

I do have an F25 but HUD is life changing to me. Speedo, don't have to look down, you can scroll through radio stations or songs that you're streaming, it gives you the speed limit if you have that option. It's amazing.
Now I find myself looking for it when I drive other cars similar to how you reach for a clutch pedal when getting into an auto after a long bout of driving manual cars. |

I love the hud for speed and speed limit info. It's invaluable on strange roads.
I didn't have factory SLI, But I got it enabled with FSC code and coding via ISTA aftermarket |

I confirmed that you can't program the HUD brightness setting to one of the 8 presets. You can program the HUD ON/OFF to a preset should you want to do that.

I bought my 2022 X3 in August 2021 - they stopped offering HUD after 3 months because of the chip shortage This is great safety and luxury feature |
