It doesn't make sense because it isn't true. We can see in other sources and threads that the X3/X4 M40i will get the technical upgrade version of the B58 which is currently in the Z4 M40i and G20 M340i. There is zero chance of it being discontinued due to emission laws.

It has nothing to do with the configurator other than being updated. The clueless BMW 'Genius' in the first post has probably given a generic response to any car being taken off the configurator. The X5 is also off at the moment and I am sure they would give the same answer if you asked about that one too.

German forum Motortalk has people ordering the M40i recently with iDrive 7.0. It also mentions the updates will be officially released on June 17th - perhaps that is when the configurator will be updated.

No, if you ask them about the X5 which is also missing from the configurator, they tell you it is down for updates. When you ask them about the X3 m40i they say it is discontinued. This only applies to the UK market, which is why on the german forum people can still purchase. This is what I was told by the BMW Geniuses on live chat and also at the BMW Park Lane dealership (which is the only dealership in UK owned by BMW directly). I wanted to order a m40i, so I'm sure if they had to option to let me purchase one with the new live cockpit they would have.

I'm still hoping the m40i returns before my order gets locked down so that I can upgrade to it.

If they kill it off for emissions rules then they will need to kill off for entire EU market. Can't see that happening after level of investment in the engine - why produce something that is not going meet requirements or be at the edge of requirements?

No I think if the 40i has been removed in the UK market it will be for other reasons. Guess we will know more in a week or so.

As I said earlier the salesman when I bought mine on Thursday read me the email off his screen I could see - it is only removed from the configurator for the updates !

If they were removing it from sale in the UK how come he showed me the paragraph with the changes and picture of the new dash on it.

I saw the email and pics ... so unless I was dreaming the car is still going to be in the UK !

I think they just mean it's being discontinued with the current power output, and being reintroduced with the 354hp output.

It's probably just like all the other seemingly 'random' decisions BMW makes concerning the UK market - why, for instance, don't we get the option to buy the 30i which is the car I really wanted. I don't think it would have taken away from the M40i as people who want full-fat will always go for it. When I queried BMW Park Lane and BMW UK over this prior to ordering my 20i they just said 'it might come- or it might not'! Not very helpful.

I hope this is true! Which dealership was it? I'll contact my dealer and get them to look into it as i'd rather have the m40i than the 20i if i have the choice.

I suspect all the updates will go live together in the UK... X5, X3/X4 M40i, and maybe even the 340i???

Emissions doesn't sound likely. Especially as it's a petrol engine and governments are busy (rightfully) whacking diesels right now.
Diesel cars have for awhile emitted less CO2 and now with Adblue emit less NOX as well.

Nox is 52 on the M40d against 27 on the M40i. And tail pipe emissions are still nearly double too. So in terms of how your the vehicle is rated diesel is still the dirty fuel and when they evaluate and tighten the tolerances again for ULEZ and the like, the current diesels will be exactly the same as three year old ones now and will become the dirty unwanted cars. While the petrols will still be seen as the cleaner cars and pass the emission regulations (my wifes old 2005 petrol seat still passed ULEZ in london while a lot of three year old diesels fails it now). Unless your doing mega mileage these days you'd be bonkers to stay with a diesel car, even more so if you live near a big city.

All valid points. But technology is improving and bringing emissions down for both diesels and petrol cars. And as per the other articles in some cars NOX is less in diesels than petrol.

If I had not gone with a SUV would have taken a petrol model. All of the above is a moot point anyway - as by 2030 (if some get there way) we will all be driving electric or cycling!

So, I just received a call from my dealer to confirm my car has arrived! I will duly be collecting from a probably rain-sodden Norfolk on Friday this week (given the weather forecast). So that's pretty much 2 months from placing the order mid-April (not bad)!

Took the opportunity to ask him about the upcoming B58 changes and he confirmed the existing M40i is still available to order from dealers and that the configurator is simply undergoing an update - should be live again in a week or two latest. At one point he was a little worried as he asked me "you did want a 40d right"?

Excellent, enjoy the handover! Was yours on the first ship out of Charleston and when did yours arrive in the UK, I'm trying to gauge how long mines going to take once in UK. Assuming it was on the first ship out once at 9000 status.

Thanks! I received confirmation from the dealer on 8 May that the car had left the factory. BMW genius confirmed to me on 30 May that my car's status was 9630 "Port of Entry" ie in the UK. I would say therefore about two weeks from UK entry to dealer (for mine anyway). I know for some it was taking longer.

The X5 is now back up on the configurator and available to order (with Live Cockpit).

Still no sign of the X3/4 M40i.....

When they say discontinued, they mean with the current engine. There’s an updated model with the new engine, dash etc, which will be on the configurator by the end of the month.
