Wireless charging problems - share your experience.

So it sounds like quite a few people have issues with the wireless charging tray in their G01.

Please share your experience here, let's see if we can find any patterns:

Car: 2019 X3 M40i
Phone: iphone 8, iphone Xs (both in genuine Apple silicon cases)
Problem: inconsistent charging - sometimes charges fine (blue light), often doesn't charge at all (orange light), and yet the cheap chinese wireless charger i use overnight at home works perfectly with both 'phones.

2018 X3 M40i
iPhone X and XS Max, both in Apple leather cases, no charging issues.

It is important that the phone is placed correctly though. Too far forward or left/right and it results in an orange light.

Samsung S9 Plus, no case. No issues, but need to place it firmly on the tray. If it slides out of position I may have to lift it up and place it on the tray again to get the blue light.

iPhone 8 Plus, No case, charges at a rate of approx 1% every 2 mins

It can slide and lose connection sometimes if phone goes over the plastic surround at back of tray and found it best to position with camera lens towards the front as that projects a bit from back of phone

I have an iPhone X with leather case. Generally charges fine. The leather case usually keeps it in place.

I have gotten an orange light I think 4-5 times over the last year, which I remedy by picking it up and setting it down again.

iPhone8 works perfectly (providing you do as above), in a cheapo Ebay silicon cover.

galaxy 9+, plastic and butyl combo case, only has charge issues if it slides too far off the pad. it really is placement or the most part, though I have noticed the range is kinda limited making me think they have only one Qi location where as some of the others for the desktop have 3.

(Edited to take out my 5yr old remarks...sorry.)

Put some quantitative information behind it. Like "I left in the tray for 45 minutes and it went from 74% to 100%".

This absolutely does NOT work consistently for my Samsung s8 with no case. I have tried about 50 times at this point. Left. Right. Up. Down. Sideways. Backwards. Standing on head. Standing on foot. Hanging from the light pole. In the car. Out of the car. Lights on. Tapping head. Rubbing belly. Eating Cheetos.

Absolutely worthless. And it pains me each day to know that it does not work. Almost to the point where I would not recommend the entire car!!! Silly, eh?

Sorta like that guy I saw last night on Amazon whos responses to one of the questions about whether the BMW X3 labeled cup holder worked in an 2018 X3. His response was "I don't know, I don't have an x3".

Back to my rant.

"Always works" means that if I leave it in the tray for six days it charges at least 1%?

An ATM machine always works. The fortune in your cookie always works. Electronics do not always work.

I feel for you, but it is absolutely relevant to know how many people have problems vs how many don't, which phones have problems, which don't. Try not to take it too hard when someone reports that their happy with how it works, even if they don't have hard numbers.

Mine charges ok. I've got an iPhone 8 with the BMW M carbon fiber case. The M emblem sticks out, so it causes the one end of the phone to be elevated by 1/8" or so, which reduces the amount of contact on the charger. I'm sure if I removed the case, I'd see more efficient charging, but right now it'll charge about 20%/hr if I'm not running anything on the phone. If I'm using Waze through Apple Carplay, it charges about 2-3%/hr, and will usually give me an orange light after two hours or so because of how hot the phone gets while Waze is running.

+1 iPhone X & XS with cases no issues. I just toss it in. If it’s really off center, it fails, but otherwise no issues.

Wireless charging + wireless CarPlay rocks!

Thanks for all the responses so far everyone, it's good to know who uses what and how they're getting on.
I will be more careful with my placement and see how it goes

Good to know that the getting hot thing is normal too!

I had a similar issue as original poster - iphone X and XS max both had trouble charging. I think the first week or so that I had the car, all worked fine but shortly after I started only getting a blue light blink 2-5x, followed by a switch to the orange light. End result being that the phone wouldn't charge. When the car was off in a silent garage I could swear that I could hear a noise coming from the charger when I placed the phone on it, like a super light humming.

At the end of the day I took it into the dealer who replaced the unit. 3 weeks later and I get consistent blue charges every time. Only downside is they washed the car and now I need full paint correction due to hard water spotting and swirling in the CB paint, so I guess it will end up being a pricey fix.
