X4 M40d First Drive Impressions

Collected mine on Friday. It is always a great feeling picking up a new car! This time around it was extra special given my previous one was stolen. For the past few months I have been in a Toyota Yaris and so no wonder when I finally got into this car it felt bigger and heavier than it is, making me initially additionally cautious especially when turning corners.

First impressions from my 120-mile trip home on a mix of urban, rural, and highway and then separately two 25-mile round trips to the centre of London are that this car is an absolute joy to drive. It is extremely comfortable. I was initially worried that with the 21-inch RFTs the ride would be firm and jittery – far from it, and with adaptive suspension selected it was an even more of a delight. I was also surprised by how quiet it was inside the cabin – I think the acoustic glass helps.

The interior is altogether refined, luxurious and yet practical. The sport leather seats are well cushioned and very supportive. My son even mentioned that the back seats were better than in my previous 535. My first choice for the interior was Tartufo/ Black with Fineline Cove trim. But I have had brown (and variations thereon), ivory/white and black leather interiors in a number of cars previously and so decided that this time around I would go ‘extrovert’. Colour choice is a personal thing, but no regrets on my part – loved the way the Red/Black interior underlines the opulence and yet sportiness of the car at the same time.

I was impressed by the sound quality from HK the Logic7 processor. I am no audiophile, but the sound was rich, deep and precise. Will need to test it connected to the phone next time to hear the difference, and also try some higher definition FLAC files.

I am so glad I have got ID6 – the screen is super sharp, clear and most importantly provides just the right amount of information. The digital cockpit with actual dials is perfect for me. My dealer commented that they were having lots of issues with customers, particularly from first time BMW owners, complaining that ID7 is not intuitive and way too cluttered.

The engine felt smooth and refined. I know this car can move with a simple tap of the right foot – you can almost hear the growl of the engine waiting to be released - but I resisted the temptation to accelerate away. Will need to be very patient as I run the car in over 1200 miles, keeping below 3500 RPM and 93 mph, and then as the dealer suggested extend the RPM range gradually, incorporating manual, paddle shifter, launch control, sport mode, etc. up until 3000 miles and then after that drive it as I please!

During my first trip, I averaged 38mph and 44.5mpg (120 miles). The two journeys to London this weekend brought that down to an average 26mph and 39.1mpg. I drove in a mixture of Eco, Comfort and Adaptive modes.

In summary, I don’t think I can sum it up better than Car Magazine put it “But to drive the new X4 is to understand it. As SUVs go, no matter what their exterior shape, this BMW is one of the most rewarding to steer.” Could not agree more!

Now for the disappointments (had to be some!):
  • The test vehicle I drove a few months back had the boot strut holding up the boot floor. That has gone and been replaced by a cheap Velcro strap that hooks on to the right side ‘shopping bag’ hook. This change makes it cumbersome to use now.
  • The dash trim directly under the steering wheel had popped out (only noticed when I got home). Pushed it back in and attempted to tighten the screw but this just kept turning and would not screw into place. Have called the dealer and sent him pics and vids – awaiting a response. Will probably need to take it to a local dealer to fix.
  • The Cerium Grey parts of the car (while I prefer the offset colour compared with black) show up marks and dirt. Will need to get these coated.

One thing I miss from my 5 series:
  • Integral Active Steering – this made my 5 series nimble, particularly in city driving and when changing lanes in traffic.

Cracking spec there, and love the interior. I would love to have gone two tone, and included red, but boss refused 😬

My boss agreed! Wouldn't have been possible otherwise!

yep. I was already pushing it, given my Q5 was only 14 months old, got her sold on the M40i, and had to negotiate colour and seats with her, the rest was up to me

I see you are selling your DTUK box, I have been contemplating whether I want to buy the harness for my box, or sell it as will fit on any 2.0 VAG
