Has anyone with this wine tried turning off Active Sound Design? It sounds to me like maybe ASD is amplifying a noise is shouldn't, maybe due to a bad ground or something of that nature.

I'm wondering if the 'whine' that people experience is from the compressor? Something in under the hood? Or just a noise created by air blowing through the air ducts?

It is definitely not a noise coming through the vents.

I'm the OP, started this forum last summer and now that it's warming up in the mid Atlantic US the dreaded whine is back and driving me nuts, I never got it resolved and all trips to the dealer so far have yielded "we don't hear anything, sorry" answers but I am going to try and have a shop foreman go out for a ride with me to see what he thinks when I go in for an oil change this week.
Sounds like it may be just a normal characteristic of the AC in the car based on other posts in this thread, but has anyone got this resolved via any sort of fix at the dealer? |

Belt and/or tensioner/pulley are possible suspects if sound varies/increases with engine speed- compressor is variable volume type, clutch is continuously engaged- there is no engage/disengagement regardless of cooling/heating load.

Hey fellas... This may be too early to tell, but on a whim yesterday, using BimmerCode, I totally disabled Active Sound Design and I have not heard the sound since.
I tried this because 1... someone here mentioned it, and 2... I noticed that BimmerCode showed ASD as having an "unassigned value," making me think that maybe the car didn't know what the hell kinda sound to make, so it just whined. I'm going to give it a few more days before I declare full victory, but it's looking promising.

Also, was in the dealer earlier this week for an oil change and surprise surprise - "we cannot replicate the problem, no fault codes, no problem" |

Unfortunately I must have been hearing...or not hearing things...last week, as I noticed the sound again this morning. It wasn't nearly as loud as before, but it's still there, so at this point, I have no idea. I'm due for an oil change at the dealer on Friday and may have them take a look at it.

Bump! New M40i owner with 1,200 miles coming back to BMW from Merc. Now that the weather is getting warmer in the northeast, I’ve begun to notice this sound as well when the AC is on. The sound is not present if only the fans are on. Sport mode seems to amplify it a bit, but that could just be my ears.

Following up...dealer said it was normal. Here's the specifics. Not sure I buy it 100% but they said they tried it out on a few other M40is they had and all of them had the same issue.

Not sure what noise they were hearing - this write up states the noise was duplicated with AC on and off, and that it is coming from the transmission... as I and others have noted the whine is dependent on the AC compressor running or not

I agree and I stressed that it is really only on when the AC compressor is running. That said, I sometimes get the sound for a few minutes after the AC compressor is turned off so I think there's a chance they turned it off and didn't wait long enough for the compressor to actually shut off.

2015 X3 F25, had this start happen late last year, couldn't replicate the sound to sound louder for the mechanics during service early this spring, was told to bring it back before or during summer when it gets hot and the sound comes back.
Sound came back, brought it to the dealer, they replaced the compressor, thought that solved it, but as I got the car back, used AC a lot of course the sound came back. Called to schedule, told to hold and they would call in a senior engineer, waited a couple of weeks, finally got called in, brought the car in, engineer sat in with me in the car, went for a road test... he heard the sound but concluded it's 'normal' ... I tried to argue this is not normal but he explained it's normal wear and tear, and he cannot sign off on any repairs for warranty since the AC is functioning correctly which it is... so... and if I wanted to completely eliminate the sound they would have to dive in, disassemble etc, which he recommends might not be worth it. I do have to note, the sound is more prominent in ECO Pro mode and less with Comfort or Sport mode. Engineer explained how that could be because car is trying to save fuel in ECO Pro mode so AC is 'struggling'? anyway... at least i got a new compressor... but needless to say, am disappointed... still want a solution but yeah... might not be worth it and am nearing time thinking to upgrade/trade in.... but... *sigh* Anyway, anybody else has updates? |

2019 X3 m40i 600mi, 1month ownership with the same whining noise with the AC on. Most noticeable from rpm 1K-2K. Rode with a BMW mechanic and at first he didn't hear it but when I turned off the AC "mid-whine" car went silent at which point he agreed that there was a sound there that shouldn't be there.
Got a call from the dealer today and was told that they opened a case with BMW engineering, I suppose its their tech support for their mechanics. Also learned they had driven other m40is on the lot and heard similar noises but just not as noticeable as my car. I suppose my car was loud enough to at least open a case with BMW. Anyway, I'm afraid they'll come back with "as designed" with which I'll be extremely disappointed. So wends8, I'm afraid upgrading (to another X3) may not help you. My 740i F01 AC is whisper quiet. If anyone has a solution or a different experience with the dealer on this issue, please share. Last edited by mikek72; 08-23-2019 at 05:36 PM.. |
