I can't help you with an answer other than saying I saw the same yesterday on the drivers side. I turned the car off for 20min and the error was gone at the next start

Seat mat sensor is not working. This happened to my M40i last year and was kicked up to BMW Germany, after being at my dealer three times for this same issue. Your dealer may push back, but that is the only fix. Be aware that the passenger airbag may not work until this error is fixed.

Thanks for the heads up! The error comes and goes, sometimes it doesn't come on at all. I'm going to the dealer on Monday, I'll definitely give them a heads up. I figured it was a sensor due to the nature of the intermittent issue.

The sensor needs to come from Germany, so it is a 7-10 day wait just for it. I haven't had the warning pop up in over a year now, so well worth pushing for them to fix it correctly the first time.

Maybe your passenger is heckling you more than the system can handle

Saw this for driver side. I did a teleservice thing (not sure what that actually means) while driving. Stopped to get lunch and when I left again the warning was gone and haven't seen it since. That was 1 week ago.

The car is in for service now, the SA did tell me there is a SIB for rerouting a sensor cable? He would let me know what the exact remedy is once the work is complete. Will let you all know.

Looks like they performed the SIB on the car, they rerouted the sensor harness that is under the seat, the way it is installed from factory, the way it moves just enough that it throws a code thinking the hardness connection is broken throwing that fault. They rerouted the harness and all is fixed. Let's hope it stays that way.

I hope so, they tried that on mine the second time it was in...

That popped up on my passenger seat a few over about a 6 month period.

When I brought it to it's first service I told them about it and they ended up replacing the sensor. They said it was a pretty known issue, no push back on them replacing it or anything but they had to keep my vehicle for a few days.

Just had this today, lasted for most of our journey until I adjusted the electric seat and it went away instantly!

Do you put stuff in your passenger seat? Maybe it's detecting weight that's not quite enough to be a person?

I have 2018 BMW X3M which intermittently throws this error and usually repositioning the seat will clear issue - sounds like this issue - but I'm at the BMW Dealer and they say there is no SIB - do you by chance have a SIB number that your dealer used to fix this? My factory warranty is out and have after market warranty and this dealer is $270 for just the diag. Last time here but service advisor doesn't appear to want to even do a little extra to check this properly.

Have them check SIBs for X3 or X3 M40i, maybe it’s not listed for X3Ms. I don’t have the exact number but this was for my X3 M40i. Shouldn’t matter but maybe they never listed it for the X3M since the seats are different.

Had this same issue pop up on our 2019 X3 - Dealer claims it is a faulty wiring harness which controls the passenger knee airbag deployment which is not covered by warranty - so $1,300 repair. IMO - a wiring harness which is not subject to wear and tear should be covered by manufacturers warranty - especially when it is related to airbag deployment. Anyone else have similar experience or get warranty coverage for this repair?
