Recall/Delivery Hold on MY20 M40i

I just got a call from BMWNA customer service to tell me that my X4 M40i will likely not be available for my scheduled PCD this Friday. Apparently, there's a recall notice and a stop delivery order due to a swivel bearing issue. I don't know how serious this is for those who've already taken delivery, but apparently it's bad enough to prevent any further deliveries.

There's a slim chance that the part can be replaced by Friday, so we agreed to talk Thursday morning and make a decision then. BMW will pay for any costs associated with the delayed trip. fwiw, the rep was very nice, apologetic and helpful. Just one of those things that happen in life . . .

Bummer! Keep us up to date on the issue/recall. I left a note for my CA to see what's what.

Quick update . . . another bpost member is also scheduled for an M40i PCD on Friday. He has not heard from anyone at BMW regarding a delay, so we did a quick comparison. I spec'd the M Sport Diff. He did not. The recalled swivel bearing may have something to do with that. Just conjecture at this point though.

The recall apparently isn't limited to the X4 or M40i. Ten days ago I purchased my first BMW for my wife to drive - a 2020 X3 x30i. Four days ago she got a phone message from BMW North America corporate office telling her to stop driving, call BMW Roadside Assistance and have the vehicle towed in for repair.

It's the same issue - swivel bearing. So far it's still sitting in our garage with 57 miles on it. I've called the local dealership a couple times to find out when parts will be available, but so far no answer.

We also got an email, here's part of what it says:
"This Recall involves the vehicle’s swivel bearings which may not have been produced to supplier specifications. Your safety is important to us, and I had hoped to be able to speak with you.
Please know that it is imperative that you do not drive your vehicle until the recall is performed. "

I'm only guessing, but if they just found out about this they probably don't have a part supply yet. I guess we sit and wait. I'm thinking of driving the 5 miles to the dealership when the time comes rather than have it towed in.

I just joined here to see if others also got a call and maybe find out more. If I find out anything more I'll post it.

Thanks for that info. I knew from my call that the issue impacted both the X3 and X4, but was under the impression it was the M40i models only. If it impacts 30i models as well, that rules out a M Sport Diff part. The issue did sound serious as the rep who called expressed concern about MY20 vehicles that were already delivered, so I'm not surprised they asked you to stop driving. I'm now wondering whether there was a defective lot of the bearing and which cars got it is a hit-or-miss. It seems that more owners would have heard if it impacted 100% of MY20s deliveries.

Not good, but at least you haven't had the issue to be shown.
If anything like the UK, I would go with the BMW Assistance to tow the car in, as then the dealer is under an obligation to fix it within a set period, or give you a loan car. Just dealing directly with the dealer you end up waiting on them and the urgency isn't there.

Make use of it, as you pay for this (BMW Assistance) as part of your vehicle.

Hope you get it fixed soon

Not good for anyone with the problem and not good for any of us with cars in production or being shipped.

Hopefully new parts will be available really quickly.

My 2020 X3 xdrive30i is scheduled to complete production in 2 days on 9/26. Haven't heard anything on the recall yet. Does this recall affect cars currently being produced?

I don't think any of us knows right now. Since the recall seems to be impacting some vehicles across the line and not others, it may have just been a bad batch/lot of a particular part. If that's the case, it should be easily rectified by segregating the bad batch from other batches. But of course, that may just be hopeful thinking on my part!

Well, I got some good news from my local dealership. The VIN for my new x30i is no longer on the recall list. They made it sound like they are scrubbing the list and reducing the number of recalls to those that were affected by the bad parts. I think that helps confirm that it was a bad batch and not a widespread issue.

They said we should hear more from corporate soon.

The BMW recall page shows no open recalls for my 2020 x30i. Not sure how up to date that tool is though

Picked up my MY2020 M40i - Carbon Black / Cognac / Carbon fiber / 19” RFT on Saturday. Was planning on writing a thorough experience, yesterday, but called by BMW NA about the recall. Unfortunately there was difficulty organizing the repair at a nearby BMW dealer, so called roadside service to tow the car back to the dealer the car was bought from and getting a loaner today. Just got called by SA - likely a week in the shop, part has to be shipped from Germany 😭. Not too thrilled, but it is what it is, and it’s for safety so can’t complain

Quick thoughts - Worth the 3 months wait and 100’s of hours spent shopping and reading through the forums. Limited by break-in protocol, but the power, sound, and feel of the engine was simply beautiful. Finish and build quality is great, carbon black looks really nice in the sun, will be a pain to maintain, but hopefully some CQuartz will help. Also, DA+ is awesome for commute and freeway travel.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, hope the part comes faster and is taken care of sooner ☹️

As per safety recall

Approximately 355 vehicles are affected on a small number of MY2020 X3 and X4 vehicles produced between 8/25 and 9/3.

BMW advises not to drive the vehicle.

Repair will take approximately 1 hour.

My VIN is showing 0 recalls, but I know my car is effected, so I guess it's not up-to-date yet.

Hopefully the parts are being airlifted directly to SC and my Friday PCD can still happen. Gotta be positive, I guess . . .
