I placed my order for a 2022 X3 M40i yesterday and when I looked at the tracking in my myBMW account it shows under standard features "deletion of BMW digital key." Has anyone seen this before? Is it possible that due to parts constraints they are removing the ability to use your phone as a key? If that's the case I'm going to have to cancel the order and wait until I can get the car with all of the standard features present.

Says the same on my dealer order spec, and I notice this in the BMW UK configurator options.

Have you received any clarification from your dealer as to what that means?

This is a strange one...

On the UK site, it's an option that cost 820 BP (1,138 USD). When its selected it automatically add the Comfort Access...

Its almost like you can't have them both!!!

That's interesting. It comes standard in the US so it's strange that it would show up on the spec list. I'm hoping that it's just an oddity in how they include a deletion like it's an option just because another package preempted it.

And vice-versa, I you select Comfort Access (for the same amount) the Digital Key Deletion is selected automatically.

My dealer-provided spec shows option ZGM Comfort Pack and also option 32Z Digital Key Deletion.

As someone mentioned, adding Comfort Pack appears to automatically add the Digital Key deletion option.

I'm also struggling to find anything that says the Digital Key is a standard feature, and wonder if like some other options this feature should be in the pack, but isn't available i.e. same reason Driving Assistant Pro adds as a deleted option when selecting the Technology Plus Pack on non M40.

Just an update on this from my dealer. Apparently, you can use a phone to lock/unloick the car using a BMW app. However, it no longer has the option to use the phone as a digital key to unlock by holding it close to the car door handle (near field ?)

Don't know how accurate this info is, but that's from the dealer.

Is this due to parts constraints related to the worldwide shortage of microprocessors?

I asked but the answer wasn't clear. I was told it was just a different way of doing the same thing via the My BMW app.

I'm always dubious when it comes to sales answers. My car is week 47 with Comfort Pack, but hopefully, someone will have a car to check earlier.

Yeah that sounds like spin to me. My dealer has a call with a rep this morning to confirm. If this is in fact the case, I'll be canceling my order until they can assemble a car with all of the advertised standard features. No point in spending this kind of money to get a gimped car because they don't have enough parts to build it complete.

This was never an option for G01.

On the UK configurator, the digital key is also deleted with Comfort Pack on the 3, 4, and 5 series cars.

I know, due to the underlying architecture being pre SP18, I believe. But the LCI addresses this.

So I heard back from my dealer. The digital key feature is in fact removed. They don't think it will return for the 2022 models. This is due to the supply chain constraints on microprocessors. Now I need to figure out what I do with my order. I hate the idea of getting a car with missing features.

Same for me with Driving assistance Pro and heated rear seats. Got my deposit back in my bank account this morning. I’m holding out for it coming back for the LCI but I don’t hold out much hope. Been looking at the new all electric Audi Q4 which is very competitive with the price of an X3 M. Shame it only has a 300 mile range which I suspect in reality will be considerably lower.

Audi don’t seem to be removing spec for their cars due to parts shortages!

So they removed those features from your build? I was able to keep those in mine. I wonder what the logic is behind the variation in parts withheld.

I wrote BMW customer service last night. I plan on pushing the issue with them. I will gladly wait weeks to months for them to get the chips for the digital key. Will update here with hope that exchange goes.

Maybe where the car is made ? North American market X3 I think is Greer SC, whereas UK seems to have a lot made in Rosslyn, South Africa.

That makes sense. Very odd that they would allow such disparities between factories.

I have the same issue, have a X3 M40i and the new price is horrendous!

Wondering about a pre-lci X3M or Q4 or SQ5

I just can't stand diesel cars!
