G01 X3 6.5" to larger screen retrofit

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to swap the small 6.5" screen on a G01 X3 made in the year 2018 (with iDrive 6, HU_ENTRYNAV2 head unit aka NBT EVO).

Name:  1.jpg
Views: 3447
Size:  140.3 KB

I've done some research and you have these OEM screens available:
  • 10.25" screen, part. no. 8715335: Fits perfectly, but does not work (despite having FDL coded everything properly)
  • 8.8" screen, part. no. 6820396: Does not fit the dash
  • 8.8" screen, part. no. 8720749: Fits perfectly and works (even touch!)

I've successfully retrofitted the 8.8" screen (OEM part no. 8720749), including touch .

Size:  137.5 KB

Here are the FDL values you need to code (I've used eSys):

Code:
HU_NTB_EVO:
CID_DISPLAY_RES: 1280_480 [02]
CID_DISPLAY_SIZE: 8_8 [03]
CID_DISP_AR: ratio_1_00 [0F]
DISPLAY_SIZE_RESOLUTION: 8.8_1280x480 [01]
DISPLAY_VARIANTE: breites_display [02]
PS: The BMW online OEM catalog (realoem.com), for some unknown reason, does not list the 8.8" screen, part no. 8720749. However, it exists and you can buy it on eBay.

Size:  132.2 KB

EDIT: I forgot to mention that in order for touch to work, you have to code 2 additional FDL values (Thank you, wayman, for the follow-up):

Code:
HU_NTB_EVO:
CID_TOUCH = aktiv
CID_HMI_TOUCH = aktiv

Just wanted to thank you for writing this article! I managed to source the same screen off of eBay and installed it last night, following the coding changes everything works.

I also coded the following and got the touch elements of the screen working perfectly too:

CID_TOUCH = aktiv (default nicht_aktiv)
CID_HMI_TOUCH = aktiv (default nicht_aktiv)

Very happy!

Thanks for your info! I just bought this screen for my “new” 2018 g01 with business screen.
One question though… regarding the coding, it can be done with Bimmercode or do I need esys? I dont have either so I’d have to purchase whatever in anycase. Thanks for the help

BimmerCode in the expert setting. Despite all the disclaimers, it’s not scary at all.

There’s a search bar in expert mode. Type in something like “resolution” and it’ll narrow down your results.

Change your search terms maybe, unfortunately without seeing it it’s hard to tell.
Also see if just doing the resolution and variants is enough.

Thank you so much this is exactly what i was looking for. bought the screen from ebay $210 (made offer) from this guy link. screen looked to be brand new and definitely OEM, even had protective plastic film on the screen. took about 3 min to swap the screen, however i paid $100 for remote coding. everything works good so far, went from this tiny screen to 8.8 with touch screen.

Just to help anyone thinking to do this nice upgrade:

I did this retrofit yesterday (along with Carplay activation on my ENTRYNAV2 navi)

10 min to change the screen (carefully… it was my first time removing pieces from my X3) + coding with an Ipad + Enet cable + Bimmercode app

I can confirm all the coding for the new screen was done with Bimmercode (expert mode)

HU_NTB_EVO:
CID_DISPLAY_RES: 1280_480 [02]
CID_DISPLAY_SIZE: 8_8 [03]
CID_DISP_AR: ratio_1_00 [0F]
DISPLAY_SIZE_RESOLUTION: 8.8_1280x480 [01]
DISPLAY_VARIANTE: breites_display [02]

CID_TOUCH = aktiv
CID_HMI_TOUCH = aktiv

Hey all. New here. Picking up my New(ly certified pre owned) x3m40i on Tuesday! Can’t wait. Getting out of my 135i. Pleased by the performance. It matches the speed the 135i had with the tune.

But I digress. The one I bought also had this small screen. I’m a little confused on what I need to upgrade. Ik the bummer-tech kit is 3k and comes with a head unit, screen, harness, etc. Do I need all that or will the new screen ($600) plus the coding tool be enough. Links to the coding tool would be helpful as well. If anyone has insight on wether this voids CPO too, lmk.

I also realized I don’t think the car has CarPlay but the listing says navigation but does not have a navigation button on the I drive controller

Thanks guys!

The bimmer tech kit might be for a retrofit. For the larger screen upgrade you can only get the screen. You can use bimmercode, bimmerutility or esysultra for coding. The screen might void your waranty since its not the original vehicle configuration. If you take vehicle to dealership and they update the headunit the coding will reset.

For carplay the unit needs to have WLAN port.

Look for this screen on ebay: 8.8" screen, part. no. 8720749

Buy Bimmercode for iOS and a Enet Cable and code it with the info in the main post. It’s easy.

You should be able to get everything for less than 300€

I was able to activate Carplay through someone on Ebay which offered the service so I guess you can do it as well.

Do you have a link to the person you got the radio and the offered service from?

To go back to the original part of the post can I ask if anyone has tried any other 10.25" screens besides the one mentioned in the first post?

I have an option on a 10.25" screen from a 06/18 build G02 X4... According to Real OEM the part number would be 65506841920, which is also an option on my 04/18 G01 according to their site but the item would not be returnable to the seller unless it was defective.

The X4 has the Navigation Professional (609 option) where as my X3 has the Navigation Business (606 option) with the 6.5" non touch screen.

Any experience would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I am going to keep on looking for the correct 8.8" in South Africa
