Changes for MY 2020 M40i
Looking to purchase an M40i and I was considering waiting until the 2020 model is available. I am trying to compile all the major changes that will be made from ‘19 to ‘20 to see if is worth the wait. Any links to the below questions would be helpful.
Any news on release date? From what I have read the 2019 production runs through July. Interior updates: Is a new dash a possibility? Will this resemble the X5? New instrument cluster /digital dash? ID7? Android integration? Drivetrain: So far I have seen a possible increase of ~30 hp. Exterior: Laser headlights? New wheels? |

I personally would wait, and maybe some of the X3M will trickle down to the X3 M40i.

2nd and subscribed. I'm in the same boat. I hope everything you posted is *true* but now I've heard since the X3 M didn't have the new dashboard in MY2020, that the X3 M40i might only get ID7. I sure hope it's the full upgrade (to match the new X5)!

It won't have a new dashboard, it will have the new digi cluster & ID7, and also maybe new technologies like reversing assist, the newer steering and lane assist with eye sensors so you can keep your hands off the wheel indefinitely etc.

It's supposed to get the new HP ratings like the upcoming M340i, no?

There's a lot of comments that say otherwise from other threads:

Not new dash, just new instrument cluster (and beware that there are already differences whether or not you get executive package in 2019, so don't assume the base M40i will get all the bells and whistles in 2020). iDrive 7. And about 30 more HP "on paper". However, note that the current M40i engine is under-rated by about 50-60HP, so I have no idea what that means for the new engine coming for 2020. The 2019 model already has more real-world HP than the paper-spec for 2020.

Maybe they will keep using the old stuff until LCI? But that will make the X3/X4 super outdated. |

history tells us...
Delete assisted gas strut Add GPF (Eu) Add m sport wheel (US) You win some, you loose some. Don't wait... just buy if you like it. If you are going to wait... just wait for the LCI release or next gen while you're at it. If you're waiting on next gen... then just wait a year after release for the bugs to get ironed out, then wait yet another year for minor updates. At that stage you mind as well wait for LCI or the following gen... During this time just sit around and admire people enjoying their M40i while you sit and wait for the next best thing. What a horrible waiting game. Last edited by IXVXI; 02-17-2019 at 06:59 PM.. |

Changes for MY 2020 M40i
Live for now... change it later if there's a solid reason too. The current car is awesome as it is. When your driving it the HUD is the secret sauce, and it's awesome on the current car.

None of the changes above have been confirmed. New ID7 full digital cluster is least likely here, and I personally don't see ID7 without the new cluster. LCI is more likely for this. Revised B58 is more likely, but also not hopeful on that one.
BMW has shown a willingness in the past to keep antiquated ID versions around for years - e84 x1 and e89 z4, and same with antiquated engines - F15 X5/F16 X6.

Given that X3M and X4M clearly have ID6, why would you think the regular X3 will get ID7 a month after the X3M and X4M production starts?
If the G01 gets ID7 at all, it'll surely be saved for the LCI.

BMW is likely saving these upgrades for the LCI due in 2020 as a 2021 model year.

For me it’s not a horrible waiting game when you have a defined period to buy. I plan on getting a new vehicle in the next 6 months. So I could buy a 2019 off the lot or order a 2020. I most likely will order a ‘20, so I wanted to understand what changes I would be holding out for.
I am sure there are others in the same situation, so this thread is where we can speculate on what might change based on previous history and changes we are seeing in other models. Please post a link with your source if possible. As we confirm what changes will happen, I can update my original post with links to where they were reported (auto shows, BMW, auto magazine, etc) |

Considered waiting for 2020 - I just ordered a 2019 as I actually do not like the gauges from the new 3 series. I find them tacky. While I wouldn't mind the power increase in 2020, I can easily get a JB4 if I need more juice. 2019 it is

The supposedly power increase for 2020 might just be a higher number a bit closer to the actual power that the B58 puts out. The 18-19 M40i's are really underrated by BMW.
