I can't believe they still let this problem persist. My AW 2020 X3MC (Sept 2019 build) had paint peeling from under the rear bumper. I thought about bringing it in but ended up sanding, priming and painting it myself. It isn't perfect but you cannot tell unless you clean the surface well and look carefully with a bright light.

Wow this sucks… can't believe they still didn't fix this issue. Really hope this isn't a thing with the 2022s

I posted earlier about the paint peeling on mine around the spoiler, I also have it peeling under rear bumper. I contacted the service manager provided photos, was told they want the Rep from NJ there when they look at it. That was months ago have not heard anything back yet, at this point I figure I'll be trading it in before they look at it.

I assume the paint is the same that's used in other facilities seeing most BMW's share a similar color pallette? It seems the issue may be related to the process in Spartanburg?

The only spot(s) I can see is the front of the rockers behind the front wheels...Does this count as paint peeling or rock chip?
My front bumper and front hood are PPF'ed so it seemed okay. Rest of the car is ceramic coated. EDIT: It looks like the same exact spot as gregreed8313. Will have to bring it up when I take it in for break-in service next week.

Those in NJ may have heard a scream followed by an F bomb today around 3. That was me washing my car and having paint fly off on a 9 month old $85,000 car. I can’t believe this is still happening to these cars. I had my hesitation buying a German car manufactured in South Carolina. Between the paint issues and badges being applied half assed it does nothing to alleviate my concerns

God damnit. I had hoped 2021 models would be safe from this issue, but 15 months later I just noticed the underside of the rear bumper having a large painted area peeled just from driving. I never pressure wash the car and been hand washing it. Donington Gray.
Reading that some people had the issue re-emerge few times after a re-paint, I wonder if did finally get fixed for everyone? Did you have to fight with the dealership to have it fixed under warranty? So frustrated by having to take the car in for this. Last edited by Klazu; 12-11-2021 at 12:58 AM.. |

Confirmed I have this on my 2020 X3M Donington Grey. It seems to be isolated to just the rear diffuser area. Only on the passenger side… so far.
About 8,000 miles on the odometer when I noticed this.

Saw a paint flake today while washing my 2020 with 3500 Miles. Same issue as everybody else. I put the mudflaps on the car when it had only 200 miles to try to keep this from happening to no avail. Will be contacting BMW tomorrow to see if it's something they can take care of under warranty.

I dont have pics, but my daughter's 21' x1 had a plastic part peel. Car was a month old. The dealer acted like I was the only one to have this problem. Obviously its throughout their factories. The paint literally blew off. Thankfully you could just pop the piece out (which they obviously replaced).

New process for BMW to process paint issues under warranty. A corporate rep from BMW needs to see and inspect the vehicle to validate the paint issue. Once the issue has been validated, you'll need to have an estimate for the paint work. Next step is repaint.
So far, I've had the BMW rep validate the paint issue and had the estimate done. I need to follow back up w/ my SA to schedule when to drop off the vehicle to address the paint issue. FYI: 2020 DG X3M 4,900mi flaking paint on passenger side lower rear bumper as well as some bubbling on the roof spoiler (both left and right sides). |

The estimate is performed by the dealer. I just needed to take some time out of my day to bring the vehicle back and have the paintshop at the dealer perform the estimate and submit it to BMW. |

I think that has been the process for some time? At least it was for me in December and today I dropped my 2021 X3MC for a rear bumper repaint. I hope the new paint will stick..at least they are using a very reputable BMW-certified bodyshop here in Vancouver.

BMW Plant Spartanburg do not paint bumpers for X3, X5 or X6. In fact no BMW plant paints its bumpers on site, they are moulded and painted by Plastic Omnium a Tier 1 company/supplier of exterior trim components to most of the worlds car manufacturers.
