The regular bimmer is pretty fast already.
Is the BMW M intended for the second, third, nth car? I figure the owners don't drive it for daily uses. To experience its high performance, the M car must be driven in the race tracks or interstate highways.
For me, it came down to cost. If price were no object I probably would have gone with the X3 M Comp. But, for the way I’d want it speced out I just wasn’t willing to fork out an additional $20,000. I have come to really appreciate the M40i for what it is. It really is 95% of the car the X3 M is. Is that extra 5% worth almost $300/mo more (I finance)? Only each person can answer that for themselves. For me it wasn’t.

What apps or websites are you using to track your car expenses/mileage/history?

After quick search I found Fuelio and Spritmonitor. The later seems outdated, but it is nice to be able to compare fuel economy results with others. Anybody using these?

No question. It would be a waste, any maybe even a slight nuisance, for a lot of people.

Point is, lots of people use all kinds of M cars as everyday drivers. Maybe my greatest joy is sliding up to a stoplight and scaring the heck out of some poor driver when my exhaust goes POP and CRACK.

I use Fuelly. Works well and the ads aren't intrusive.

I use FillUp for Android, but it only tracks fuel and mileage, nothing beyond that.

Speed Limit

On my 21 MSport I was able to remove the speed limit sign on the displayby finding it in settings. I can't find a way to remove it on my 22 M40i.

Can I easily lock out the rear hatch opening from key fob, or change it to unlatching but not flying open short of removing the lifters? Thrice I have pressed the button with my flanks and had the hatch slam into my garage door.

This is my setting. I don't have Show current limit checked, but I still see it on display and HUD.

Can you de-select "Adjust manually" without selecting "Show Current Limit"? Have nothing selected?

I think jsh139 and I may have differently optioned cars than yours-we have a third option IIRC. We've discussed this elsewhere.

Yep - I just checked my car, and I have an "Off" option. You don't have that hidden in there? Can you scroll and uncover it? If it's not there, I'd say de-selecting "Adjust Manually" is your only hope - in that part of the menus.

Thanks, I'll try that. The car is a week old, I wonder if the software changed ?
Easy to find on the 21 X3

It appears the key fob only opens the hatch lid and will not close it. Accurate? My wife's previous GLC43 allowed this functionality so it can't be regulatory... Kind of a dumb feature omission unless I'm missing something?

No, you're right, it's dumb. Can be fixed with bimmercode.

That’s odd. I have a third option there labeled “Off”. “Adjust Manually” won’t turn it off. That just causes your cruise control and LIM functions to automatically follow the posted speed limit.

There are several different ways to get to this particular screen. You can also get to it via Settings > Displays and also through the HUD settings, too. Maybe try going through a few other settings to see if it’s there. Very weird.

Oswego, is that pic from the Driver's Assistance menu or the HUD menu? If it's the former, go to Car > Settings > Displays > HUD. There should be a Speed Limit menu item that can be checked or unchecked.

Is it possible that BMW changed their brake pad compound or started using ceramic pads? I washed my car a month ago and put about 700 miles on it. Pretty much all suburban city driving. And the wheels look almost as shiny as they did a month ago. You can see where I wiped my finger. There’s barely any dust there.

I mean, I’m not complaining. But BMW brake pads used to be notorious for dusting like crazy. Is it just because the pads are so new? Or is it a real change they made?

yes much less dust than late 80’s and 90’s for sure, seems like a slow decline like more than one compound change over the years. My e30 with BBS basket weaves was a real menace.

I don't know the answer but maybe because it has some sort of coating on it that resists the dust build up? There are a few products out there for that...I think Rim Ice may the name of one I used in the past. I do remember my X6 being just horrible with the brake dust.

If you look in your owners package, there is a guide that talks about the braking system. It explains that the new pads are optimized to minimize brake dust, so I guess it's working...

Agreed safety first. Also bridges are more prone to icing. Where I am, freezing rain happens, would be prudent to monitor the temperature.

Pete, my last pre covid trip was to the highlands, very scenic. I hope you were not affected by the recent power outage.

Another safety feature, is when you lock the doors with the engine running, the car emits a really loud beep.
