VERY INTERESTING! there's additional bracing because of the glass roof since less body stiffness etc etc.

They really did think about it.

For older generations that are coming to these vehicles from higher end, but older generation german cars, the limiting factors on performance were durability and comfort, not cost. So you couldn't improve a cars performance much just by adding a more expensive part, the performance was more or less maxed out from the get go. Any increase in performance came at the expensive of the longevity of the part or a change in NVH, etc. Younger generations tuning JDM cars don't inherently view the trade-off that way.

I've come to realize that as you go up the food chain in vehicle cost that the performance left on the table is less, and there are more significant draw backs in turning up the dial.
Well thought out / stated and hold merit!

What is the real risk here????

Is it mainly w/ a lot of launches/especially modified cars? I don't race my car - but do occasionally get on it to pass on mountain roads, etc.

What is the risk for the rest of us?
its a flaw only with the X3m and will fail eventually just a matter of win. Do the PM to be safe!

Depends how much you abuse the car. If you only launch it 5 times a year I’d say yearly. But if you launch it 10+ times a month I’d say bi monthly. Some have seen it bend after just a few launches.
FYI you can get a bolt from homedepot for $7 dollars with washer and nut that is stronger than the oem. I’m currently doing every 2 months just because I rather not break another driveshaft and it takes me all of 3 minutes to change it.

Will be coming up with my own solution soon!

What bolt are you using from HD out of curiosity, would love to try if you're finding success with it.

It looks like this but I get the 5x 1/2 inch version as the 6 pokes out a little to far for my liking

You're replacing the stock 14mm bolt with a 1/2" one which is 12.7mm, and adding more play?

I thought the OE was 12.x mm? Did I read it wrong? It would make sense if people are replacing OE size with a stronger bolt. Lets the OE bushing have the same amount of play (so no NVH) but a far stronger bolt which would (theoretically) resist bending.

M14x1.5x148mm. When searching for the part number/size, I saw that you commented on the weird size a number of times.

If only BMW thought of sourcing their bolts from Home Depot :P

My caliper shows the factory bolt at 12.9X mm. It's a cheap caliper, but right under 13mm looks to be about right. Yeah in theory an M14 bolt should be 14mm. If the 1/2" is truly 12.7mm, it's probably marginally smaller.

Also isn't Grade 8 about the same as 10.9?
