Bit disappointing really.
Remember the days when a bulb was just a bulb?

Like you're finding, many components are now network nodes on the car's bus. Makes some DIY stuff hard to impossible.

If there a "control module" spare part listed for the X3M seats ? Maybe worth trying to find out what it connects to in the X3M. It does sound like it may be expensive, if even possible.

Exactly, it’s becoming almost impossible to little things like this yourself. The wiring is just so complicated on a modern car.

I don’t want to start getting into the extra cost of different modules etc just to illuminate a badge.

What I thought would be a simple connection issue clearly isn’t.

Its a shame you didn't get them working as you wanted but they do look pretty cool and far better than the bland black ones.

I'm hoping that someone does some sort of retrofit as they have added the same seats to the new 2 series 240i as an option now so they are going to get even more prevalent.

The fact that there is no illumination on the seat emblems of these optional M Seats could be due to the costs of the modules and additional wiring

Surely there cannot be that much difference?

It would be interesting to see the component breakdown of the optional M Seats aginst the M Seats on the M Comp to witness the differences. There are some workshop Technical Training Documents on the forum index menu which only provide minimal details of the electrical system. Im guessing your best bet is finding an undestanding master technician and parts guy to research and identify the components needed and if any additional programing is required.

I admire your undaunted approach in attempting this 'mod' in the first place so I am hoping it all pays off

Anything like that could be useful. I’ve searched but can’t find what your referring to. Do you have a link please?

Don't think they're floating around anymore since newtis went offline. You'll need ISTA.

Little package arrived this morning, a four piece crystal set, the shifter has an illuminated M logo.

Will hopefully be fitting it in the new year. It’s absolutely critical when fitting the shifter that the battery is disconnected to prevent shorting of the shifter module.

On the Mild hybrid M40i, is there a second battery in the boot (trunk)?

So I’ve been to my local main dealer this morning to purchase a flow through spoiler for the tailgate.

My plan was to wrap the original spoiler panel already on the car with a black vinyl before fixing the flow through spoiler with 3m tape and Betalink K1 panel bond. That way, when I sell the car I’d be able to remove the flow through spoiler causing no damage to the original spoiler panel. I’d been quoted about £80 to wrap the original spoiler panel.

Then I had a thought while at the dealers, would the same spoiler that is for the F97 X3M Comp which comes with a gloss black spoiler panel included that replaces the Comps original more sculpted spoiler panel be cheaper than the cost of the wrap?

To my surprise when I gave the parts guy the part number for the Comp spoiler (51192471091) it was exactly the same price as the M40i spoiler (51192464329).

So for the same price I get the gloss black replacement spoiler panel intended for the Comp which is identical to my body coloured panel spoiler on my car now. I can fit the new gloss black panel spoiler and the flow through to my car and when I sell the car I can remove the entire spoiler, sell separately and replace with my original body coloured spoiler panel. If that all makes sense?

But I had a few issues! The parts guy at first refused to sell me the Comp spoiler as it’s not shown for my chassis number, said he couldn’t sell a part to me for a car I didn’t have

I politely explained that I could spend my money (a considerable amount) on what ever I wanted to spend it on. He then said that the spoiler for the M40i had to be fitted in conjunction with a front pressure lip (about £20) but he didn’t know what that was. When I explained to him exactly what it was and where it fitted and that I didn’t need it because I have an after market front splitter (on order) he again said that he couldn’t sell me the flow through spoiler without the pressure lip. By this time I just thought I’d spend the £20 on the lip just to stop him arguing!

But…..when I was finally ‘allowed’ to order the Comp two piece spoiler, after agreeing that they could put a disclaimer about me ordering parts not intended for my car, it turns out that there is no mention about a front pressure lip when ordering the Comp version.

So it should be in next week

Hey Shaun,

Did the OEM parts come with an idiots guide on how the spoiler should be removed and swapped out for the X3M spoiler then for the flow through spoiler to be fixed on?

Nope, not a thing! I’m guessing BMW assume that you’d get them to fit it. I used this video

The only thing they don’t really show is getting the original spoiler off. Just give each side a thump with the palm of your hand while pulling backwards and the two trim clips will come away. That was the hardest part of removal.

There’s a thread on here somewhere where it shows what part of the flow through has the Betalink K1 is applied (very messy stuff). It’s much easier to fit and bond the spoilers off the car and leave them to set overnight. Refitting took about 5 minutes. It really is quite easy to do.

Thanks bud, yeah it makes sense to fit and bond the spoiler over night then simply fit it the next day.
Think I’m going to order one as I’ve already got the Auto ID front lip spoiler. All I need now is the bloody car….which should arrive this week.

Carbon seat backs or rear of headrest area came today for the M seats. Quality and fit is excellent and matches the BMW carbon perfectly.
£162.05 delivered.

I used genuine 3M 10mm tape in strips around the edge to fit them.
