I am having these exact same two problems. The felt fix worked for a few weeks but now my panoramic creak is back. The left dashboard chirp/creak that is only present will the vehicle is in motion is very annoying. At first I thought it was the sound system but the creaking chirp remains when I turn the sound off. It's all very disappointing. A Mercedes GLC is likely in my future, it's only a question of when. I consider these two items and other build quality problems I've had to be unacceptable at this price point.

You may need to keep an eye on them once in a while, more so if you use the sunroof a lot, as they tend to move a fraction over time. |

more panoramic drama
I think I am headed that way. I picked up a pack of "bumpers" from Home Depot last night for $2.50. I got the white rounded type normally used on kitchen cabinets and drawers. They seem to be about the right size. Depending on how it works out I may go for the more square form factor.
Meanwhile, this morning, I dropped the car off with my BMW dealer for this problem along with the dashboard chirping. I left the bumpers with the service advisor and gave him the benefit of the information in this thread. It's a bit of an experiment. I'm curious to see what they come up with now that I've told them their felt tape attempt did not last more than a few weeks. If all else fails then I will follow the wise counsel of this forum and apply the bumpers myself as shown. When I explained the bumper solution to the service advisor, he gave me the practiced "resting neutral face" we've all seen. My loaner car is a 2018 X1. As someone mentioned, its panoramic roof is very different. Mostly, like everything else in the X1, it is much smaller than the X3 version. The X1 feels to me like a 3 series sedan. It could be a nice low cost option for anyone who doesn't need a rear seat or a lot of storage capacity. The suspension is comfortable but I think there are better options at that price point. Quote:

placed a couple of cabinet "bumpers", approximately the size of the pad of my pinky, in the location described in this thread in my 2013 X3. The creaking from my sunroof is COMPLETELY gone. Thanks so much for the info and detail guys!

I have the same positive experience with this solution. I last updated this thread with a final dealer visit. I showed the service advisor the cabinet bumpers and it did not compute for him. Their second felt tape solution attempt did not last as long as the first one. After a week or so the creaking was back. Since I've applied the bumpers...perfection. I expect I will have to replace the bumpers once they wear down over time but I'm OK with that. It's much more convenient than schlepping to the dealer.
I wish there was such a solution for the wind noise issue. Luckily, I guess, it is not nearly as annoying as the moonroof creak. |

With the warmer (for winter) sunny weather starting it made me want to open the sun shade. The creaking from the roof just started to drive me crazy, but also proved to me just how good of an insulator the shade was.
Glad I checked this thread because those little pads made my roof as quiet as a church mouse (always wanted to use that expression) and the fix cost less than the gas to drive to the dealer to complain. Thanks to those who found this solution. |
