Well, I went into BMW at the weekend seriously intending to take up this offer. However my position my current PCP was so unfavourable that we just couldn't make it work.
According to BMW's own valuation, my X3 M40i has lost £22,000 in value in 8 months!! Ouch. |

Why? Most people in the trade know BMW's sales model of jacking up the list price then pulling people in with big discounts and PCP only results in one thing. Artificial price of what the product is worth and disastrous secondhand values. Mind you people keep falling for it. I mean who thinks an X3M is worth £60k yet alone £80k!! They can't even make it ride properly! Hate to think what the answer would be if you needed to get out early on a X3M PCP deal !!

The price I paid, not list.
The list price for my build was £60,830 after discounts I paid £55,599. The valuation given on Saturday was £33,000 to £36,000 depending on condition. So best case, £19,000 devaluation, worst case £22,000 devaluation. From list price it's even worse, potentially a £27,000 loss. |

I wonder what you'd need to pay to buy your car back. Porsche add about £10k for nearly new Macans vs what they pay for them. I'm guessing they would sell your car at a little under £40k
Part of the issue is the lack of resale value for extras. |

Yeah, I am certain that was a low-ball figure and from there they would have given me more as 'good will' or 'loyalty' if they thought they could get the new deal done and still make money on my part-ex. But the guy was pretty honest he said even if he pushed their discretionary amounts on the PX to the absolute max, I'd still need to put in several thousand in cash - which was a no-go for me.

If it’s lost that much in 8 months - surely this means the GFV is optimistic. On my M40i it’s 25k after 4 years and there is no way I can see it being worth that amount based on the valuation above

Apart from odd track day specials, this is the first 'real world' motor I've driven with over 350bhp. It's also the first SUV, and first auto box I've driven - always had manuals before now. So bearing all of that in mind, I have to confess that for the first hour or so of mostly urban, dual carriageway and m-way driving I wasn't feeling the love. Certainly cabin quality, fit and finish is a massive improvement on my 2016 F31 but I just couldn't gel with the X3. The exhaust sound in Sport/+ was harsh, artificial & boomy and grated on my ears, the gearchanges felt too abrupt, and yet in comfort it felt a bit undramatic. Then it clicked. Got the seat height/position & steering wheel spot on (no lumbar and that was giving me a bit of an issue until I found the right combination of angles) My "driving style" shifted from manual to auto and I finally figured out when to use - and more importantly when not to use - sport mode. Oh my. Talk about Jekyll & Hyde.... in comfort, the M40i delivers a polished and frankly waft-tastic experience. Still plenty of bite if a quick stab of the throttle is required, but it suits the chassis so well. But go 'stick left' and bury the throttle & all hell breaks loose. I know the ASD is generally unloved, but it actually made sense when giving it full beans. Covered a fair bit of ground today. M-way and dual carraigeway, sweeping fast A-roads with good surfaces, a couple of twisty B-roads with the usual cratered surfaces, and a decent selection of urban pothole extravaganzas. Even in full Sport+ on 21" RFT's ride composure was so much better than my F31. Yes, if you push it hard there's a bit of understeer and some gentle body lean, but for such a tall heavy car it's remarkably well controlled. I never felt I'd run out of grip before I ran out of talent. Had an (almost) brown boxers moment when a car I'd pulled out to pass suddenly decided to signal right, but the big blue stoppers did a remarkable job with absolutely zero drama. I really do think this could be one of the most accomplished cars I've driven - a premium feel and quality ride when needed, but savagely quick (for such a big beastie) when required and uncannily agile for all its bulk. Add the practicality of an SUV and it could be all the car you need. I'm in....... |

Couldn't get the same Phytonic/Oyster combo from stock unfortunately, so will be "slumming it" with Sophisto Grey/Black with gloss black grilles on the M Sport 21" cerium wheels
There was actually an X3M C in the showroom with that colour combo, and although it had the black/silver M-specific wheels it still looked pretty mean |
