It depends on personal preference and/or circumstance.

I could be asking the opposite question, as I’d never chosen an AirBnb, and don’t think I’ll ever choose it over a hotel.
Large groups are the only time I use AirBnB. 5-7 bedrooms, large kitchen, a pool/jacuzzi. We travel with a big group, so unless we are on a cruise ship, we try to stick together. We also rent several passenger vans or large SUVs on Turo and save a bunch of money splitting everything. I LOVE hotels when it's just my immediate family though.

I didn't bother reading the thread but after so many airbnb experiences i'd rather stay in a hotel. Most of the time the prices are comparable, and you don't deal with people who think they're owners of the taj mahal letting you stay there for a few nights.

It really depends but after so much airbnb's and how much it turned ridiculous (same for Turo, but turo makes sense still to rent cool cars on a trip) with people thinking they are hot shit just because they own a 1b1b apartment downtown somewhere I'm looking at both options before I book.

Obviously we travel differently, I'm ok with a bed at night and a shower in the morning and don't really care about anything else the hotel might have to offer. And for that I care about the price and location of the place, and if i can find a holiday inn at a similar rate to an airbnb i'm staying there so as to not deal with bullshit like "no guests are permitted to ring the bell unless it's an emergency".

For us the strong points of Air BnBs are:

1) We love having a kitchen and will generally do breakfast, lunch, and snacks at "home" and go out for dinner when traveling.

2) When International we really like being in a neighborhood and experiencing the culture of "living" in that city. Hitting the grocery store for supplies, walking to a neighborhood restaurant, local shops, etc. Being is a hotel makes us feel confined.

3) Space to stretch out. We generally pick places where my wife can get up early, go make a cup a tea and read a book on a balcony while I keep sleeping in the bedroom.

4) Laundry. Especially when traveling internationally or to a place like Maui. So easy to pack super light and wash your clothes once during the trip. Great for swimsuits.

5) Locations. So many options for places to stay where there are no hotels around.

6) Pets. We often travel with our dog and it's great to be able to bring her with us and leave here in the house if we go to dinner without worrying that she might bark and disturb the other hotel guests. Also, bathroom breaks for her are much easier in an AirBnB with a yard than a hotel.

If you know someone who owns a condo within one of the resorts on the strip, they are kinda perfect. Kitchen, separate valet parking which is less crowded, access to all the hotel amenities (pools) etc. Not sure if they can list on AirBnB though, it's probably against the rules.

Sounds like you rented a room. That sounds horrible. I would only rent an entire house.

Exactly. But by some of the comments here I bet some people think it's only renting a room lol

I just came across this gem in the Times:

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/08/t...st-refund.html.

That one reminds me of numerous reviews I've read on Airbnb. While they're likely the exceptions, it does make you aware that you're paying strangers ahead of time in the hope and with the expectation that they're honest and will act responsibly.

How much would you bet that at $800/night the dump in London was highly-rated? Mind you, I'm assuming Airbnb ratings are open to being finessed, as it would be odd to pay that much for something that wasn't highly-rated.

I've stayed in Airbnb-type rentals before and will again. I stay in ones where the host is an individual, local, and available for restaurant recommendations and if anything should come up with the rental itself. However, most of my travel lends itself much better to hotels.

I've never used Airbnb but I did book an apt from booking.com and it ended up being the best place I have ever stayed at. Next vacation I will consider something similar.
What stops me from Airbnb are all the horror stories of dirty places or owner cancelations. That's not something I want when flying from USA to EU with family.

I've stayed at an Airbnb but only do so when it helps me get closer to the place I want to be. eg, I'm going to do something at a location where hotels are nonexistent.

I absolutely hate Airbnb out of principle over the deceptive marketing practices and what they have done to the housing situation.

I'll ignore the latter and address the former.

Saying you're paying for cleaning is BS. Absolute nonsense. You'll notice that the cleaning fees are per day rather than a fee to cover a maid after you leave. A maid shows up and charges $100 to clean a place. She doesn't charge $500 if a guest had been there 5 days. They use the fee to hide the true cost of the rental.

Also, the owners insist that you personally do some cleaning (sometimes even laundry) before you leave. Even when they were charging you "for cleaning."

Lastly, while most Airbnb ads are legit, you are always at the risk of running into a scam. The scam is that someone offers a place they don't own. You arrive in town and it's too late to find another rental or hotel. The "owner" says "sorry, the unit was flooded but I can put in you another unit down the street" and it's a dump.

It you are local and can vet it ok - Don't book a travel vacation unless you know a reference

That's ridiculous. You can see if the property has reviews. Obviously no one is booking a property with one review or negative reviews.

'Be very careful'

Some of you seriously need to get with the times...this isn't the 90's anymore
