With the valve open all the time and in some modes at certain RPM you can get a drone. It's not very loud or annoying my any means but it is fairly noticeable at certain ranges. I prefer to leave mine plugged in and put in Sport Plus whenever I want to get more noise. I also have a high flow downpipe though so I get more noise as it is.

I’m still waiting on the delivery of my 2020 X3 M40i, especially now with corona and the lock down in Belgium... no clue when the dealership will receive the vehicle and reopen...
but hey, better safe than sory That said, does anyone know if the sport plus setting has any influence when the engine is still cold or on low rpm’s. For example: Set to sport plus before you start the engine for an nice cold start sound Or just set it to sport plus when you calmly cruise around but want to enjoy the better sound ? Thanks... |

With my “18” Every start (cold/warm) is a roar. Whether it be a cold start in the morning or restarting after an hour long drive. It can be obnoxious as hell at times but me and the wife love it Of course it settles down after about 15-20 seconds.

Just hopped into my new my20 m40i yesterday and right off the bat I knew it was different and I'm very disappointed. Just went for a spirit drive for 45 mins on back country roads. Everything on Sport +. Exhaust note is more "refined" then earlier m40i's to go with the smooth B58. Earlier m40i's had a little bit of a deeper note. I got a nice short pop on full throttle upshifts but downshifts are without the expected cracks and pops (keeping rpm below 4.5k for now). I doubt that cat's failing is the reason. Otherwise they'd change all the M3/4's. My hunch is the timing of this change fits with them rolling the x3m out. Can’t have the little brother sounding better Last edited by Timber25; 05-17-2020 at 12:50 AM.. |

BMW states the change of logic for burbles and pops is due to catalytic converters getting damaged. I don't understand how that's possible considering all the other cars BMW has that pop and burble even more.

I'm thinking it was more a decision to tone it down a bit with release of the X3M(C).

I've seen a photo of someone with an X3 M40i, like a 2018 or 2019 and the cat was starting to come apart and melt due to the explosions and heat in the exhaust. I didn't really buy the reason for it but I'm glad I have a Catted Downpipe now even with the different exhaust overrun logic from the previous years. Really cracks and gets wild sometimes when overrun from a high RPM

Case and point. Just sold my e84 2015 x1 (n20). Had to replace the valve cover which was leaking at 60k miles (notorious for this engine). Popped my hood on my 2020 x3 only to discover that because they use the same principle plastic valve cover on the b58 they were "smart" enough to add a 10 cent stamped metal drip tray to the side of the engine head so when this valve cover decides to leak at <50k miles at least it won't land on the turbo/exhaust manifold. Thanks BMW |

Not sure if it is new to 2020, but the warm start is very bubbly! Quite nice in comfort and even more so when starting in Sport Plus. Half a dozen little pops are quite amusing.
