The F90 M5 has a similar setup with 10mm wider rear tyres stock with the same aspect ratio so they are slightly taller. However the winter spec can be either the same size front and rear, or 20mm different front and rear but still with the same aspect ratio.
As the systems are pretty much the same between the X3M and M5 I'm guessing that running the same size to 20mm wider at the rear will be fine. I wouldn't go to 30mm different at the rear with the same aspect ratio but 255/40r21 and 295/35r21 would give you an acceptable difference in size so that'd probably be my preference actually!

All seasons harden as well (not as much as summers of course), so maybe slight decrease in traction is due to colder temperatures? Did you get to drive on them while it was still warm outside?

Literally, just did that yesterday and am 400 euro lighter in the pocket. Luckily, my next service will be in the US of A, so free maintence for the rest of the three years. Hell yes, enjoy that missle now. What a phenomenal vehicle. Incredible how a, eghem "family vehicle" , can spank most cars on the road now. I love this thing!
