A well deserved wash after a 1500 mile road trip to Chautauqua, NY. Exterior today, interior hopefully tomorrow… and maybe some PDR on the hood.

Looking to change my filter on my 2018 M40i and checked on the internet for tools needed. The chassis brace was referred to as a 18mm rear and 16mm front. Went out today to replace the filter and the bolts and they seem to be torx. Any idea as to the size of the torx socket I need for these?

Thanks

15 minute job. I don't see how this can be done without removing the forward chassis brace screw, loosening the rear screw and pivoting the brace out of the way.

1. Remove forward chassis brace screw
2. Loosen rear chassis brace screw, pivot chassis brace out of the way
3. Remove air temp sensor connector
4. Loosen intake duct band clamp
5. Loosen all torx screws on air filter housing cover, remove air filter housing cover
6. Remove old air filter
7. Install new air filter

Reverse the previous steps to reassemble.

The old filter was pretty dirty after two years and ~20,000 miles.

Part number 13-71-8-577-171 in stock at the local BMW dealer for ~$55. I made an impulse purchase and didn't make the effort to save $10 for a cheaper part shipped to me.

I think one of them is E14 torx but I'm not sure about the other one... Maybe worth it to get a set of E-Torx 😏

Here is a right after install and about 2 months later for me (pic with mudflaps is 2 months after).

The pics are subjective with lighting and exact perspective, but thought I’d share.

Is that with H&R springs? As that is pretty much bang on the money!

They are. I’m pretty happy, but about 8/10 on the rear. It could be about .5” lower.

I can fix some of the gap with a 5-10mm spacer - just haven’t gotten around to buying one yet. Trying to find some winter shoes. 🤣

No pictures of the exterior cleaning from this weekend. It is such a fleeting feeling of satisfaction. Rain and bugs start the cycle all over again. Ha.

But...something a little more lasting (depending on how long I like the look). Installed this last night. Super easy to do. The picture is not great as both sides are the same brightness. I also have two more for the rear doors, but not sure I want that many BMW images when people are getting out.

Maybe it's just perspective but you seem extremely close to that garage door.

I've almost kissed the rear bumper on mine a few times when I'm trying to leave space up front. The worst part is I bet the opener obstruction sensors wouldn't trip, so the garage door brackets would leave a nasty gouge on the bumper.

It’s close, but not that close. I can squeeze behind it.

Funny story, my 328i used to not always engage into first gear. When I’d park in the garage I’d just leave it in first and not bother with the parking brake. One day when I went to open the garage door, I heard an awful sound as the door scraped up the rear bumper.

That’s the day I learned my garage floor wasn’t level.

Hard lesson to learn, ouch. I think it's normal for garage floors (at least in newer houses) to be sloped away from the house. I guess for drainage purposes.

Took WhiteIce over to BMW dealership to place an order for an i4 for my wife, trading in her Volvo. When her i4 comes the main garage will be filled with two Mineral White Metallic BMWs- one ICE and one all electric.

Dents? What dents? I had quotes ranging from $578, $three fidy (yes seriously), to $250.

They came out great even at $250. I don’t know what the other guys were going to do more.
