I had to make a 45 mile or so trip last Wednesday afternoon from Oswego, NY to Syracuse and then back. I81 was closed south of Syracuse. Area had a lot of snow and, to my surprise the major north-south divided highway was almost unplowed, unsalted, and unsanded. Probably would not have made the trip had I known the roads were not being attended to. Mostly, traffic remained in one lane varying between 40 - 45 mph with respectable distances between cars and just following each others tire tracks. Every so often a car would pass at a much higher rate of speed using the mostly unused left lane and I am sure these cars contributed to the half dozen or so cars I saw spun out in the median or off the shoulders. My X3 with the factory Goodyear RFTs did well but I could easily feel how slippery it was and see how I could easily lose control by being stupid. A few times I felt the onset of a sensation similar to hydroplaning in really slushy conditions or when taking curves. Just a reminder to go a little slower. Bottom line, by driving reasonably for the crappy conditions I had no problem but the margin of safety was certainly substantially reduced.

If you're on 18s- the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 are arguably the best all-around, currently available RFT winters:

Same. I even parked on ice a couple times and no issues at all. I'm very pleased. For reference though, I live in VA where we don't get more than 2-4 in of snow on occasion. I would never drive long distance in snow in all seasons. But its not cold enough or snowy enough to justify winter tires here.

I was told that the Style 305 snow tire package that I ordered was back ordered. The dealership is suggesting the Style 317 (originally from the X1) instead. I don't have time to wait since I'm going for a long road trip across Quebec next week.
It seems that the load index is much smaller with the Style 317 (94 vs. 99 for the Style 305), which might potentially pose a safety risk if the car is fully loaded. This might be why BMW does not recommend these tires for the X3. What do you guys think about this? Note that the 18" wheels package (Style 307) is back ordered too. 17" Y Spoke 305 Pirelli® W210 Sottozero2 RSC 225/60 R17 99, Run-flat Tires vs. 17" Star Spoke 317 Dunlop® SP Winter Sport M3 DSST 225/50 R17 94, Run-flat Tires |

^^ bimmer 88, as Anders stated....
http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp The speedo will be off, showing lower 6.7% than actual speed. Surprised dealer would suggest the option. Wheelwells clearance: Will fill out the wheelwell by extra 22 mm. Make sure that you have enough room under the fender. If not, consider lower profiles or smaller rims. SPEEDOMETER: When speedometer reads 60mph (96.6km/h) actual speed will be 64mph (103km/h): 6.7% faster. If you are in Toronto, lots of tire guys around, I use an indept. You need BMW if you bought Tire/wheel warranty pkg. http://realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?mo...26&hg=36&fg=15 Last edited by barcelona; 12-18-2014 at 06:33 PM.. Reason: Post 56 below, is correct, when I entered into tire calculator I input x1 as the OEM , rather than the x3. Thanks. |

Quick update on my issue: I complained to my dealership about the X1 winter tire package not being very well suited for X3 and told him to cancel my order. He then contacted me a few moments later and offered me to use these tires temporally. He will order the set that is on back order, and when it comes in, I can come by and he will swap the rims for me.
Anyways, thank you all for your help on this. This forum rocks! |

Never felt the GY RFTs performed very well in snow. Had 1 incident where they actually performed quite poorly and only getting 30K miles out of them made me go with Pirelli RFTs 3 months ago. Took long trip to Vermont in snow and ice and was quite pleased. So far so good.

Spent two days up at Mt Rainier, WA. My wife's X3 had no issues in the snow. I think I floored it once on purpose to see how it felt, traction wise. It spun slightly and then regained traction pretty quick. They had a good amount of snow from what it looked like (I'm from Los Angeles so any amount is a lot).
