I was looking on tirerack for a set of rims to go with my winter rubbers. I noticed that some of the wheels they suggested have a 40mm offset instead of 45mm. Is this okay?
Here is the link of my pick. Let me know what you guys think of the look too. Thanks! http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...All&sort=Brand |

the American Racing brand wheel you listed includes new lug bolts and correct centering rings. When you receive them, check to be absolutely sure that the centering rings are installed and when you remove them from the X3 the first time be sure the centering rings stay in the wheels and don't pop out and stick to the hubs. I've had the adapter rings slip out on other wheels. Your X3 may, or may not already have some clear grease on the hub where it goes into the wheel ring. If it does not, it's a good idea to put a light coating of white lithium grease inside the wheel ring to prevent the rust that forms on the hub from "freezing" the wheel in place making removal difficult. The centering (adapter) rings are usually made of aluminum so can be damaged or bent when installing the wheels, so be careful to align them carefully and to push the wheels straight onto the hubs. On the X3, wheel hangers are almost essential unless you are a world-class weight lifter and can hold a 70 lb. tire/wheel combination at arm's length and position it to a fraction of a mm. See: http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showth...hanging+wheels for info on wheel hangers for the X3. |

I am waiting for my X3 35i M-Sport (Alpine White) here in Saguenay (2hrs north of Quebec City) and I have been doing quite a bit of shopping for tires and wheels today.
I have to say that I am now leaning towards using my M-Sport 19 inch wheel as winter wheels because as much as they are pretty nice, they are not as nice as a unique aftermarket wheel. So instead of having very good looking winter wheels, I prefer to use the stock ones for winter and buy some new ones for summer. And I did confirm with my dealership today that we do not need the TPMS valves on the Canadian X3. I also found a lot of rims with the exact specs that Lotus provided us. Lots of them in the 200 CAN$ price range per wheels. So I don't think it is going to be too hard to find good summer rims. TSW brand and RTX offers very decently price rims. I am looking for non-RFT at this time. I will carry a sealant bottle from Canadian Tire and an air compressor. My dealership (Quebec City) is making the 307 style 18 inch with Pirelli Sottozero-II for 3700$ + tx which is just insane. That equals to about 500$ per wheels just for the rim. I don't think it is worth that price. 500$ for a rim will be a lot nicer in the aftermarket. Let me know what you guys are buying for this winter, it is unfortunately coming soon. |

I am also now looking at a second set of wheels for winter and I agree that the dealer is not the way to go, too expensive. There are tons of BMW copies that will fit for winter perfectly at around 200$ each.
For tires, my experience with performance winter tire is not good. These tire are good in big cities (like Montreal) where most of the time, it is wet or dry. When I was living there it was fine except that I was always getting stock in snow during storm. Embarrassing when you are stock with the kids and there is a big line of car behind you that can pass you. Real winter condition need real tire and you can not have an amazing snow tire and ice tire, they are two different design. A lot of highways will require ice tire and for the rest, snow tire. Again it all depends where you live but here in Quebec with the driving I do, I want the ultimate show tire. I got stock so many time with my RWD e46 using Contiental, blizzak, Michelin, etc but when I tried the Ghislaved, they were just amazing, so much grip!!! Now they don't seem to make my size so I am going with Nokian Hakkapeliitta which is a high-end version similar to Ghislaved. |

FYI: Just called my dealer in Montreal, and he said
(1) only 18" wheels will fit on my X3 35i (2) the Dunlop tires will not come in until the middle of the winter (3) he offered me sotozero tires for $405/tire update: another dealer says: (1) 18" Dunlops will be available, $440/tire (2) 17" will fit on my X3 (3) 17" pirelli plus wheels = $3195 He will try to get me aftermarket rims for cheaper and will call back Other update: One dealership now says that I can't put 17" wheels on my X3 35i because the engine is too powerful??? wow 400$!
Got a quote from independent garage... Berlin 18'' wheels (BMW replica) for 150$ each + Dunlop ... M3 (non-RFT). for 2200$ all tax in. I will use non-RFT, no TPMS and a repair can kit Tire pressure monitor are useless with non-RFT tire IMO and with so many year of driving experience, I never feel the need to have this feature |

OK, another dealer has said that on a 35i, 17" wheels won't fit.
So to sum up, the best winter tire seems to be the "PIRELLI Winter 210 Sottozero Serie II" (recommended by the local consumer reports: http://************/3k422vt ) Dealers in Montreal charge between $405 and $422/tire, +$200 installation. So between $1820 and $1888. Tirerack charges: $274/tire=$1096 + $156 shipping + $77 Duty + $30 Brokerage Fee= $1359. If I get it installed at their recommended place: C. J. AUTO 2000 INC, it's $20/tire, +$5/tire run flat fee + $2.50/tire valve=$27.5 x4= $110 installation. Total fee: $1469. So I could save about $350. |

I think that's a subjective call. Certainly the Pirelli is good, but based on the research I did comparing it to the Dunlop SP Winter Sports, the Dunlop was the better tire (at least for the conditions I face here). I am going with the Dunlops (which I have had before and liked) on OEM BMW 308 18" wheels (takeoffs from another new X3).

OK, I found a guy who will give me the Pirelli w210 Sottozero II runflat tires for $362/tire, *including* balance and install. So that's $1448, which is even a little cheaper than the TireRack price would be.
He will also sell me 18" BMW replica mags for $181/mag, +$50 for the new bolts and centering rings. He will also store my tires for the season for $50. That's the guy I'm going with. If anyone from Montreal needs a reference, you can message me and I'll pass the info along. Or if there's lots of demand I'll just post the info here if he agrees. Won't you get a constant error light & tone without TPMS or can you disable the alerts?

For my 28i my dealer (BMW Ville de Québec) suggested a set of wheels and tires 17 inches (225/60R17) instead of 18 inches (245/50R18) for over $ 3000
Wheels = BMW style 305 Tires = PIRELLI Winter 210 Sottozero Serie II RUN FLAT I don't know yet what I'll do. I think it's expensive but I don't have time for that. |

From the Quebec consumer reports magazine, Protégez-Vous, this month's edition (cover page: "Winter Tire test"), under "performance snow tires". Subscription required I think. http://www.protegez-vous.ca/automobi...rformants.html In my case, when I say "best", I don't mean price or thread life. I mean pure traction. I do a lot of city driving, AND a lot of long distance inter-city highway driving. I need good snow AND ice tires. This is the only tire rated for all three driving scenarios (see table in the link above). |

The survey by TR as posted by XB101 is more valid, I think. The Dunlops are the better tire, just slightly.
