"Golf Tee Mod" for X3 M40i
I finally did mine today and compared to other videos of BMWs, I was blown away with the results. The M40i screamed after the left exhaust was open during startup. I think the left exhaust lacks a little sound dampening since the left exhaust definitely had more "clipping" with the noise and it seemed to be even louder than the right one. The gurgles that followed were amazing.

I've been looking through a few technical docs related to this system. I believe it should be possible to keep the flap open a with a fuse-pull rather than disconnecting the module entirely.
This document describes the function of module Y42a (Electrical Exhaust Flap). According to the fuse board wiring, module Y42a is the only circuit serviced by fuse F203. Now, as the unit is a PWM driven servo, it will fail in its current state if the power is removed. So you would need to use BimmerLink or another method to make sure the flap is opened when you pull the fuse. Upon fuse replacement it should revert to the commanded position. The document also confirms the flap position is driven by the following inputs (and not strictly driving mode):

So what's the verdict on this? Does the exhaust flap need to be open before unplug the connector to keep it always open? I purchased the cheater plug BMW sells for that solenoid and want to be sure I am not permanently closing the flap.

How is that the case if the only way to turn it back on once deactivated is via the back up?

with Bimmerlink, the app blocks out/overrides the signal to the exhaust valve temporarily via the OBD port/app connection to the selected state in the app. As soon as you shut off the car and remove the bimmerlink BT connection it goes back to the normal operating parameters. I bought the app and then returned it because it didn't permanently set it open and remember it.

I, too, would love to see a comparison video comparing with flap open and closed. Anybody care to make one? I don't have my M40i yet so can't try it obviously .

The documentation suggests so. According to the functional description the servo will fail 'open' if the PWM signal fails, however if the power is removed then it will stay in whatever position it was in.

Before you spend money on the cheater plug, I would just try pulling fuse F203 in the rear fuse panel. All the cheater plug does is provide a mechanical place to stow the connector if you disconnect it. Pulling the fuse should achieve the same for free.

Ha totally missed your post. I see, have you tried it yet? So I should have Bimmercode open it, then pull plug for the solenoid so it stays open. Turn off the car, pull the fuse, the plug the solenoid back in. Seeing as to the exhaust being warm and in sports plus doesn't guarantee the flap is open fully upon pulling solenoid. Now i need to get Bimmercode. Would prefer not to be the guinea pig on this but might be. Thanks for the research above! |

If you want anything more permanent, I would suggest pulling the fuse. |

I agree with you on the fuse as long as there are no ill effects to other systems - but i thought the VSC1 system is good for those with sensitive neighbors/HOA fines...
