Maybe the auto 'box is cleverer than most drivers hence why the economy is now better, however, if hypermiling maybe a manual 'box can still win?
I really don't know, but I would love to know what BUZE would get on that same journey with the same spec car but with an auto 'box. |

I'm pretty sure I'm not 'hypermiling' really, I don't have the patience for that! However, I try to be 'smooth' and not just on the throttle. I think most drivers don't know how to take corners, and that involves a lot of braking/accelerating.
I often see it on smaller road, you follow a 'zippy' car that does 80 in the straights, but you just catch him again at the next set of corners. Drives them crazy to be caught up by a truck ;-) But yes, I'd be curious to see how the auto box can do any better. I'll know in a couple of years, as I'll very likely upgrade to a 3.0d, when the new model is released...

Naturally you will not be able to do any comparison when the new model is released, because the next generation will have more efficient hardware/software. I do not think there will be a chance of getting better with a newer 3 litre engine vs the older 2 litre engine. But there again we might all be surprised. There might not even be a 3 litre diesel in the next X3! As a matter of interest, when I first purchased the car, over one tank full, I did average over 45 mpg, but that was driving in eco mode in my socks. |

sdrive experience
My first real drive of my recent 2014 sdrive (manual) purchase so I took it easy, setting cruise to 60 mph. About 120 miles round the M25/M23 to Gatwick and back for an early saturday morning and computer says 60.1 mpg.... By comparison I often see 60+ from my 2007 120D driven within the 70 limit. I doubt I will ever see 60 again from the X3 but it is possible.

[QUOTE=gIzzE;19400800]This was the instructions I posted before....
[b]Calibrate BMW MPG /QUOTE] I'll give this a try. It is generally about 2 mpg above the actual calculated value. Overall, over 24,000 miles, the mpg is marginally above the 30mpg average the US estimates for the mileage. I suspect, though, that I've driven more highway mileage than the EPA uses for their calculations, since I seem to average about 26 in town, and 33-34 on the highway. |

My X3 28d, the 2 liter, would do about 40 mpg US gal. This should be equivalent to 50 mpg Imperial. Your larger engine may vary. Sin_Gas

[QUOTE=kevink1;19475434]The computer is giving you a very accurate figure then. Well within the margin of error. If it were me, I would leave it as it is.

And is this in stop and go traffic? Or any highway driving? My first tank was pretty poor after I bought the car. Not that bad, but it is a diesel and highway miles home. I wonder whether the tank wasn't completely full when I picked it up. |

I have also seen the London legs of my commute increase from 33mpg to 34.8 as the x3 reaches 5000 miles. Maybe the engine loosening up a bit, or my new driving style now i'm in a 4 x 4. |
