I took a new M340 for a day-long test drive and came to appreciate the Live Cockpit Pro, but it's personal, and it's for this car's application.
I think that iDrive is the best UI in the car business (by far) but for some reason, BMW keeps missing the mark on the digital dash side. Audi's and Merc's applications are far superior. I just don't understand why BMW is providing almost none of the display flexibility that is the whole rationale for this technology. With that said, it works for me in this car . . . My soon-to-be-ordered X4 will be the first AT car that I've owned in almost 40 years (you do the math). In any of my other (MT) cars, the counter-rotating tach placed way over to the side would have been a non-starter. But in an AT car, it's a form and function thing. That tach has less function, so I can handle a lesser form. My personal preference is three displays - HUD for speed, side display for Nav (I don't want a moving map down in my line-of-site), and dash for audio details. Live Cockpit Pro allows me to have that, so it's fine with me. But as I say, that's a very personal preference. Aside from that, sinbad did a good job outlining the iDrive 7 enhancements. One thing he didn't mention is the enhanced screen resolution that comes with 7. That's a huge improvement imo.

I've been driving an Audi with Live Cockpit for the last 2 years and whilst it has more flexibility I haven't ended up using it...
I don't use the full nav view and I prefer this on the main screen. Looking down for long period feels more dangerous and less natural compared to the centre screen where your peripherals are more likely to pick up brake lights etc... and react faster. I like the car stats in the dashboard and the music, but always keep the speed and rev counter at full size. I like the simpler implementation of the BMW dashboard, not tried the merc, but it does look graphically nicer than ID7 Functionally, BMW's implementation always gets the best reviews. It all comes down to personal preference, but most of us are used to progressive change and variety which all the manufacturers are aiming to provide. |

On m340 it is the extra oil cooler under the bumper. Just like m3. And bigger front brakes 374 mm so only 19 inch wheel fits
Not sure it will go to x3 m40 but the engine will. This 382hp engine is a gem. Feels like 400. Like i said i was surprized how hard it pulled at 100 degree heat at high elevation. Low end torque I like better vs m3. |

I think that the screen that's in the current X3/4 with iDrive 6 is very good and better than the older Audi and Merc interfaces that are being phased out. But the newer screen that's in the 3 with iDrive 7 has an even better resolution - and personally, I'm a sucker for a pretty screen.

I agree. I really liked the car a lot. I need a car for a Florida home and considered the 3, X3 and X4. Really, any of them would do and the M340 would have been least expensive and most fun. But nice interiors are really important to me and at the end of the day, BMW made my mind up for me by only offering the nicer merino leather in the X4.

Fingers crossed they have some quality improvements in the MY20 too. My 4 series and 3 series were problem free. There seems to be quite a few X3 owners with ambient lighting, panoramic roof, and steering wheel issues to make me worry a bit about my order. I used to buy BMW for their legendary German build quality, but that seems to be slipping. Hopefully there are way more owners with no problems on this forum.

No M Sport Seats or Acoustic Glass available to order in Canada though. Definitely a contender to replace my 440i in the next year. |

Is Canada under the realm of BMW North America, meaning we should see it here in the US? Sorry if it’s a stupid question, just really hope for the new engine here in the US...If the US doesn’t get the upgraded engine, even more reason to move to Canada!
Also, weird why they won’t give you acoustic glass? Hopefully that’s just an inadvertent omission like HK audio was for a while... |

Really informative thread and good discussion points. I am in a hunt myself for a M40i (after selling off the E92 M3). Having owned numerous BMW vehicles in the past (albeit all in the E-series era), technical revisions of engines sometimes do cause issues so what is the likelihood of the B58TUO1 being problematic given the increase in HP / revision of injectors (from what I read)?
Also, one of the key factors that swayed me to the M40i was the exhaust note. Not sure if the engine revision will affect / tone down the exhaust too? Contemplating a MY19 with immediate delivery or a MY20 which takes 2-3 months to arrive (the additional HP, ID7 and Live Cockpit does not really bother me). |

1st post to the forum but I've been lurking around here for some time. I've been in the market for an X3/X4 for a while. Haven't pulled the trigger yet. Yesterday, I received the following email from an SA at a dealer here in the Chicago Suburbs I've been working work with:
"I'm following to see if you got the opportunity to test drive the X4 M Competition during our "M Town" event on Friday. What did you think? I also found out that the 2020 X4 M40i will not get a HP increase, but it will get the updated iDrive 7 infotainment system." Don't know if that statement's definitive but would think so. The salesman seems plugged in. BTW, I did drive the X3MC at the M Town event. |

Too much confusion on the upgraded engine. I usually do not believe salespeople, even well-meaning ones, but will believe BMW documentation. Can't be much longer before we know for sure . . .
On a separate note, I've been wondering whether the upgrade to iDrive 7 means the latest HUD? You can see it here on the new 3.

Personal opinion. I personally don't think that there's anything "mind-blowing" about any of the individual incremental changes for the MY20s. However, taken a whole, they're meaningful updates to me. Many others have expressed the opposite opinion. As it relates to the latest gen HUD, I very much like the new moving map which overlays a virtual map over the your actual view of the road ahead.
