Other than cost, what’s is the down side to the 550 brake kit?

I don't see any downsides, other than you will deviate from stock pads and rotors

I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of dimpled rotors, but bigger rotors should provide better braking and better heat management.

IMO, the X3 M40i should come with bigger rotors from the factory, something like this:
  • 348 for the 30i.
  • 374 for the M40i.
  • 395 for the X3M.

Anyway, I'm still hesitating between the G30 M-performance brake kit and 2-piece rotors in OEM size. Can't decide what's best for my driving style and canyons-like roads.

Bigger brakes allow a larger contact area to help cool them down so they do not reach that high temperatures and they can cool down faster than smaller ones. Vented directional curve discs cool down much better than solid ones to help create a air vortex to siphon heat away. 2 Piece rotors help not transfer heat, grooved or drilled discs allow gas formed by pad decomposition to escape the braking contact surface.

Lol! He’s convinced me that the most optimal route is going to be slotted rotors w/ EBC green stuff (for daily ability). I would imagine you’ll lose at least 1lb of unsprung weight per corner

Burr001 would you mind weighing your new vs old rotors for comparison?

According to Paragon's website, the fronts weigh 24.9 lbs (11.3 kg) per rotor, and the backs weigh 16.7 lbs (7.55 kg) per rotor. I guess the 2-piece rotors are the best option for the brake-fading feeling I'm getting.

On the other hand, I'm not sure about EBC yellowstuff vs. greenstuff. I had yellowstuff, and I really liked them. I also think that greenstuff will be like OEM pads. I don't know, I keep digging.

So stock rotors are 27.8lbs in the front and 18.6lbs in the rear. That’s 10lbs of unsprung weight youre losing as well!

I’m seeing more commentary on greenstuff having less brake dust and that’s my main point of contention with this car

Ok I'm not an expert but here is my take on why I choose this setup. I drive like an asshole 95% and in either traffic or not, doesn't matter. I like to know what I can and can't do, so me upgrading my brakes with the parts I choose will help give me confidence on the street and the track.

I choose 2 piece rotors due to the less heat transfer, less chance of warpage and the fact that I can rebuild them by adding new rings (roughly 600 a new pair). The material of the rotors aren't simply just any metal.

Yes some people like the look, or the price of R1 concepts, I've used the cheap stuff and for what I need them to do they fall short. Most people here driving an X3 are leasing them or using them as a grocery getter and don't need to spend money for what their use is.

SS lines to help with better/firmer pedal feedback and a set of track pads and a set of daily pads as its easy to swap them. The reason I kept stock size was a larger aftermarket support in terms of parts since the Supra and other m40i models share the same calipers. Will larger brakes help?, sometimes just depends on what your driving use will be. Don't have to go extreme with 2 piece rotors but maybe really good pads can give you the performance feel your looking for.

Yes green stuff will have less dust than compared to OEM but will still dust not as quickly. You can try red as it is a ceramic pad or any other ceramic pad to lessen cleaning time. I will use Red pads this summer and see how I like them, they say it doesn't have the intiail bite but will have good stopping power.

I haven't tried Yellow yet. Sometimes depending on the road I may not have the time to wait for them to come to temp tbh.

Totally agree. My brakes will prob be due this year, and I’m trying to decide how I want to go about them. Following this thread, well, just because. For ME, personally, I will prob go stock/OEM rotors, less dusting pads, but thinking about the SS lines. I truly appreciate brake performance… and quite regularly may just happen to do some rather high speed slow downs (triple digits)… so I’m trying to balance the best of both worlds.

Thanks! I'm in the same boat. I like to push my X3 as if I robbed it, haha. So, I appreciate your input because I'm looking pretty much the same: better braking performance. I do like how bigger brakes look, but I would probably stay with OEM size for now and see if it works for me.

New paragon rotors, ebc red stuff pads and Goodridge ss lines are on. Brake pedal is firmer a bit touchy at first but I need to bed the pads more.
