During an investigation many years ago in the US, it was determined that a lot of drivers did not press the brakepedal hard enough to activate ABS.
Advise for those with "bad brakes": find a deserted road and do some stops from 60mph, then you know how it feels when ABS is activated. |

Several years ago I went to the BMW Performance Driving School in SC. We most definitely activated ABS during the braking exercises. If it didn't sound like the front end of the car was being torn apart then you weren't doing it right, LOL.

If any of you ever drove a RH Drive Golf GTI made in the 1980's, you will know what I mean. You had to stamp on the pedal really hard to get the car to stop, and there was no ABS fitted.

Not sure what cars you guys are coming from but if my petite wife can stop a 3.0d MSport doing 70mph (without complaining about squishy brakes) then I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say you boys had better put the ballet shoes away whilst driving

I've always thought the brakes on our X3 are excellent, but most road tests and all comparison tests with other SUVs that I've seen comment on the relatively long stopping distances for the X3. I've always wondered if it was due to the hard tread compound on the run flat tires.

Agreed. That was an extreme example. The benefit of attending the school and playing in my X3 afterwards is that I have a much better understanding of ABS, how much brake I have, how much I typically use, and how much remains should I need it.

woodchuck: stopping distance depends on; road surface, brake performance, ABS performance (if you activate ABS) and tires.
At comparison tests road surface is equal. It is unlikely that BMW has shitty brakes, so I agree: very probably "non competitive" brake performance is likely due to RFT:s. |

I had DS2500 pads in my last X3. Most things after that feel like they're just not stopping.....
The E83 had the same calipers as an M3 so it was easy to find decent pads. |

I've driven my 2015 X3 28i 20k miles and from the first mile, I thought the braking was not very good. You have to travel into the brake pedal so much to have it stop, it's really annoying. If I'm in traffic and I let the slightest pressure off of the pedal because I don't focus on pushing the pedal down the hardest, the car lurches forward and I do not like it. We also have a X5 35i and the brakes are a DREAM compared to the X3. Very even and smooth braking and a lot more powerful

Do some research on brake "bedding."
For my 2011 xdrive28, I looked into putting a "big brake kit" on, and with my research and talks with my local shop, the cost didnt outweigh the benefits I might achieve.
After that, I followed up with a brake bedding procedure, I think it helps with bite a bit. I didnt go crazy with the bedding procedure, since they aren't performance brakes per-se, or anything close to that. Also, as others have posted....tires matter. |

For a typical performance brake system using street-performance pads, a series of ten partial braking events, from 60mph down to 10mph, will typically raise the temperature of the brake components sufficiently to be considered one bed-in set. Each of the ten partial braking events should achieve moderate-to-high deceleration (about 80 to 90% of the deceleration required to lock up the brakes and/or to engage the ABS), and they should be made one after the other, without allowing the brakes to cool in between. http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su...-system-bed-in |

I don't know anything about this particular brand but they are almost 50% cheaper than the Alcons:
http://pbbrakes.com/brake-kits/bmw/x...brake-kit.html They actually make a big brake kit for the rears as well but are still developing the electronic braking function. Oddly, they'll still sell you the rear brakes but you have to acknowledge that "I understand the handbrake function will be lost". Is that even legal? Who would buy that? http://pbbrakes.com/brake-kits/bmw/x...brake-kit.html Lastly, Stoptech makes brake kits that consist of the rotors, pads, and brake lines but are only OEM replacements using the same calipers. |

Interesting to see this thread... After getting into our latest F25, I have to agree, I was a little surprised by the braking, its quite a bit softer than I expected. However, I thought it was just because I was used to driving the X5///M. Also, I agree with others, tire choice is a huge factor, and the runflats on the X3 are junk! I was running Michelin Pilot Super Sports on the X5 and it absolutely helped me feel comfortable driving that thing like it was my M3.
So, I too am searching for brake upgrades for the X3, and I'll definitely be getting out of the runflats as soon as I can. I am hoping to widen the stance with a set of 20" wheels, at which point I'll shoot for the Michelin Pilot Super Sports as well.

I agree. It's not a parts thing. It's simply a different feel.

Just bumping
I am reading that the X4 m40i brakes were upgraded and in looking through REALOEM.com it looks like the front rotors are upsized coupled with X5 front calipers. So who wants to try?? |
