getting M car and talking about mpg, no offense but it's stupid move, u have to understand that this type of car is to drive not to thinking about gas fill up. I'm at 14.2mpg, once a week now 55bucks. city/highway mix. my previous 500hp q50 red sport were taking same gas once a week but with 19gl tank so 70bucks per pump. either u enjoy or just get tesla or smth like that. good luck with trade

Gas savings is just something I brought up as why I was thinking to downgrade because the X3M is being used as a daily and I'm not pushing the car the way it was meant to be pushed. Most of the time I am on the highway, I'll push it here and there, but I don't drive it like I used to when I first got the car. That's why I had mentioned, its a beast but not sure I 100% am in love with it. Again, I just wanted to make sure there was enough savings to trade in or if I was getting the better car and just paying the extra $10,000. The more I thought about it and after watching Joe Achilles video, the more I realized what I need is a car that I can use for "fun" and a daily. However, I did want something with at least a tad bit of power, something that would be in the "sweet spot." I'm thinking the X3M40 is that sweet spot for me. I think that extra $10,000 savings could go towards something else. Whether that be a G80, or a 718 cayman or something along those lines, we will see. I'll have to make a decision tomorrow as the dealership is waiting for me to either lock up a x3m40i allocation or pass up on it. Everyone has been super helpful, I love this forum. Truly believe the BMW community is one of the best. Thank you everyone for the input. |

Not sure an M car is the best to use for high mileage they can get a bit jarring. The M40i is the best balance, better ride, better low down torque and a better overall daily but won’t hit the peaks of the X3M.
If you get a 22 you also get some newer updated tech to help sweeten things. There is no bad decision they are both great drives. |

X3MC = The better "overall" vehicle, insane power, competes with pretty much anything on the road. X3M40i = the better daily driver At this current time, I need a daily driver an would prefer putting some of the other money I have into a true sports coupe/sedan. |

I love my 2021 X3M40i and chose not to upgrade to an X3M for various reason I won't get into. However, the gas mileage is not that much better than the X3M. I only get about 20 MPG combination city/highway driving (always in Sport mode). On long trips just highway driving I get about 25 MPG in Sport mode. Granted, I have a heavy foot and I'm sure I'd get better mileage in Comfort or (gasp) Eco mode, but I can't stand the dismal throttle response in those modes so I keep it in Sport.

I have a 2020 M40 and get 24mpg running around mixed driving and 30+ pure highway at 70-75mph. Never used ECO and throttle response is fine in Comfort. B58 has so much power and torque that Comfort mode still has plenty of zip. The EPA ratings are very different as seen above so I think the real life mileage will also be substantially better for the M40.

Just a quick thank you to everyone's input here. I ended up moving forward with ordering a X3M40i.
Sorry that this thread became about MPG, haha. It was just a slight bonus I had brought up, not nearly the reason I was switching. Ultimately in the end, I found myself cruising in the X3MC rather than pushing it and it led me to tell myself I'd rather save $10,000 and put that $10,000 on a G80 purchase in the near future. The X3M40 just seemed like the better overall daily (for me). Last edited by FCS247; 12-14-2021 at 10:47 AM.. |

Congrats on your ordering a new X3M40i. Did you ultimately test drive one? I test drove both a ‘20 X3M and a new ‘21 X3M40i, although several weeks apart.
The X3 M40i is the sweet point between performance, gas efficiency and sportiness. In Eco Pro, it is a little laggy but it serves well its purposes for fuel efficiency in daily commute and city traffic - a drive mode the X3M does not have. For long drives, going back between comfort and sport (for passing) is all one needs. Put it in Sport Plus and the car handles insanely, like a go-cart. By the way, we also compared the X3 M40i against the Porsche Macan S ('19, V6, 348 HP). We test drove each one day apart before deciding which one to order. In terms of overall driving dynamics, we liked the X3 M40i hands down. Last edited by Chris Pringle; 12-16-2021 at 08:31 PM.. |

I have a '22 LCI X3MC, and while it only has 1800 miles, I have been getting 20.1/20.2 MPG driving pretty conservatively. Granted it's cold here now, and 1200 of my 1800 miles have been under the break-in period, but the X3MC *can* deliver decent MPG if driven sanely. Click into M1 or M2 a lot and start hammering, and that number drops quickly. My Camaro ZL-1 used to have the same Jekyll/Hyde behavior.
